Mrs. Jacobsen’s Math Class

Class Expectations

Welcome to 8th grade math! In order for the year to be successful, these are some of the guidelines I expect my students to follow in the classroom. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.

Materials Needed:

·      One Spiral notebook specifically for math (to be used every day)

·      Pencils and Erasers

·      Red Pens

·      Loose Leaf Paper College rule

·      Graph paper

It is expected that every assignment be completed in pencil in order to receive full credit. When an assignment is corrected in class, it is expected to be corrected in red pen for full credit.

Attitude: The expectation is to learn and try your best. It is expected that you show respect for your classmates, teacher, school/class property, and yourself. Always remain positive and never give up on the problem in front of you. “Quitters never win. Winners never quit.”

Classroom Agreement/Rules:

·        Be respectful to classmates, classroom property, and teacher

·        Be responsible for yourself

·        Be safe

·        Be cooperative

·        Be a hard worker

·        No Food or gum is allowed in the classroom – Only Plain water is ok.

Readiness: Students are expected to be in their seats when the bell rings. They need to have their pencils sharpened, spiral notebook out, homework completed and need to be working on their daily entry task. Students are allowed three tardies before a detention will be given.

Attendance: Attendance is highly encouraged. Every class is important and your participation and presence is appreciated by all. If you should miss class, your assignments need to be made up within the number of days you are absent plus one. Assignments are posted daily at the front of the classroom.  Students will also find homework posted on the calendar under the clock.

How to earn your grade:

Supplies needed DAILY: Students need to have their math spiral notebook, pencils, loose leaf paper, and a red pen in order to correct assignments. I will provide rulers, calculators, and other math tools during class time for the students to use.  Students are responsible for all their other supplies.

Homework Ideas:

·        Every class period, we will work on an Investigation. If you do not finish, it is your job to finish the class work and then complete the homework if appropriate.

·        Homework done in pen will not be accepted.

·        Extra credit will be given occasionally.

·        Cheating or copying will automatically result in a zero and a referral.

·        If you need extra help with an assignment, please come to my room before or after school, 7:30 am to 8 am or 2:30 pm to 3 pm.  Also seek help at the homework center.

·        If you are absent for a test or quiz, you are responsible for making it up before or after school.

Missing Assignments/Late Policy:

·        Homework and class work will be due the following day it is assigned.

·        Each day the assignment is late, the grade earned drops 50%. (Example: If an assignment on time earns 100%, then the first day late earns 50%, the second day late earns 25% and the third day late earns 0%.)

Failing Grade:

·        The day a student begins to earn a grade of 60% or lower, F, a letter will be sent home with the student informing the parents. In addition, the student will need to come to my classroom daily until the grade is raised. They will do their homework, have time to ask questions, or be given extra practice sheets to better their understanding for 8th grade math concepts. A staffing with parents may also be held.

·        Failing is not an option! You must ask questions and seek help!

60%    Quizzes/Tests – Weekly Friday Quizzes, Unit Tests, Projects

40%    Assignments – Class/Group work, Investigations, ACE, worksheets, participation, projects, entry tasks, Notebook checks, and study guides.

100- 93 A                93- 90 A-                 90-87 B+                 87-83 B

83- 80 B -                80-77 C+                 77-73 C                   73-70 C-

70-67 D+                 67- 63 D                  63- 60 D-                 60 and below F

Music: Sometimes, music will be played during class time. The music will come only from the teacher’s computer. All lyrics will be clean and approved before playing in class.

Cell Phones: Cell phones or Ipods are not allowed! Keep them off and in your backpack! If they are used during class or found on, they will be taken from the student and given to Mr. Hilton.
