| Daily Launch | Read Section 4: Safety in Science on page 26-31 in HOLT LEVEL BLUE textbook. Be sure to study captions, pictures and margin notes. | Take out homework and highlight the two or three words or ideas that you built webs around. | Take out homework and highlight the two or three words or ideas that you built webs around. |
| Daily Mission | Briefly discuss safety contracts. Begin discussing lab safety and behavioral expectations during labs. Make list of “Do’s and “Don’ts” when working on labs and activities. Brief introduction to safety symbols and common safety equipment. | Each student will share at least one of their “question webs” with their home group and explain some of the connections that they have made so far. Students will look for opportunities and info that might allow connections to be made between different webs at their table. Students will also have time in class to start a new web or add research to their current webs. |
| Handouts | Student Safety Contract | None |
| Homework | Get Student Safety Contract Signed. | Get student safety contract signed. Work on rough drafts for Space Science Mind Map Cover Page. 2nd Period: should have 5-6 “webs” by tomorrow. 3rd Period: Should have 4 or more “webs” by tomorrow. | Work on rough drafts for Oceanography Mind Map Cover Page. You should have 5-6 “webs” by tomorrow. |
| Tuesday, September 1, 2009 |
| Daily Launch | Read over Materials and Procedures sections of today’s lab handout, Sugar Lab. Then read pages 558-561 in your Enviro Science textbook. Mrs. Flynt will check signed safety contracts. | Take out question/idea “webs” and highlight the focus words on any/all of your webs. Mrs. Flynt will check signed safety contracts. | Take out question/idea “webs” and highlight the focus words on any/all of your webs. |
| Daily Mission | Discuss lab safety equipment. Review lab expectations and procedures. Introduce Sugar Lab. Discuss safety concerns, make predictions, and construct data table. Set-up and conduct Sugar Lab. Clean-up and discuss homework. | Students will share a few more idea/question “webs” with peers. Demonstrate the art of finding common themes in among seemingly dissimilar facts or topics. Students will propose and debate several potential “Big Ideas” that could be used as the main branches for your mind map. Mrs. Flynt will circulate to help students find their “Big Idea” connections. | Class began with a conversation reminding students that their enthusiasm and effort is needed to drive the learning experience. Mrs. Flynt thanked those students that are directing their own learning with their questions and curiosity. Some, however, are expecting to be pulled along without thinking or putting forth effort. Students were reminded that this project was designed to focus on their own interests. The rest of the class period was spent demonstrating how to connect the detail of the mini webs to two or three Big Ideas that will form the branches of the Oceanography Mind Map (see today’s mission for 7th grade) |

| Homework | 1st: On the back of your Sugar Lab WS, make a graph (to the best of your ability) of your group’s data. Be sure to use a ruler! 7th: Make sure your safety concerns, prediction, and data table are complete and include detail. | Begin working on rough draft of layout and how to tie your webs (the details) into 2 or more “Big Ideas” that will be the main branches that connect back to central Space theme. | Begin working on rough draft of layout and how to tie your webs (the details) into 2 or more “Big Ideas” that will be the main branches that connect back to central Oceanography theme. |

| Daily Launch | Take out Sugar Lab WS and notebook paper. Write correct heading on paper. Clear tables to prepare for lab. | Take out all rough drafts and brainstorming papers. Start working on final layout and design. |
| Daily Mission | 1st: Discuss and take notes on independent (manipulated), dependant (responding), and controlled variables. Students will average and compare class data and discuss ways to improve experimental procedure to control other variables. 7th: Set-up and conduct Sugar Lab. Follow up with discussion of variables and ways to improve experimental design. | Students will continue working on their Mind Map Cover Page project. Mrs. Flynt will check in with each student and make suggestions regarding big ideas and themes, grouping and organizing related ideas, adding detail, and using artwork and creativity to support the information being shown. Remember the overall requirements for your final draft: 1. Name, Class Period and Grade neatly printed in central box. 2. Overall theme is centrally located and easily identifiable (Space or Oceanography) 3. Includes two or more “Big Ideas” that branch into other topics that are further divided to demonstrate relationships and organization of ideas. 4. Include background knowledge, facts, and/or questions you hope to investigate about specific topics. 5. Use of artwork, color and creativity to support information and organization of ideas. |
