6th Grade

7th Grade

8th Grade

Daily Launch

Read/highlight Branches of Science packet.

Pass back papers and calculate grades.

Set up paper and heading for today’s review. Title: Topic Review Notes

Daily Mission

Classnotes: Intro to Environmental Science. Students will create a working definition of Environmental Science while also examining many of the different branches and disciplines that relate to or contribute to the field of Environmental Science. As students develop their definition, introduce the following Latin and Greek root words: bio, ology, botanicus, zoo, ologist, micro, astro, onomy, and geo. Students will also debate the classification of various organisms

Students will review their own Rocket History Research bibliographies as we discuss today’s concepts. Distinguish between “cite” as in “citation” versus “site” as in “website.” Review in detail what information should be included in a bibliography citation and how all the different information is distinguished within an MLA citation (quotes, italics, regular font, etc). Have students discuss how to locate authors, article titles, and web page titles; how to back-track using the URL to find website titles; where to look for website sponsors and copyright info. Demonstrate what a Google search string looks like compared to an actual website URL so that students can identify when they have made the mistake of copying the URL for the search page rather than for the actual web page or image. Begin discussing what information needs to be included in the annotation.

4th Period:

Reviewed the following topics at student request: side-scan SONAR, types of mechanical waves (sound waves, seismic waves, ocean waves), wave medium, rest position, particle motion vs. wave propagation, particle motion in combined-type waves (surface waves, ocean waves, Raleigh waves, Love waves), focus, epicenter, fault, hanging wall, footwall.

5th Period:

Reviewed the following topics at student request: mafic magma, felsic magma, SiO2 content, viscosity, intrusive rocks, extrusive rocks, gabbro, granite, basalt, rhyolite, pumice, obsidian, Wadati-Benioff zone, oceanic-oceanic subduction between North American plate and Pacific plate along Aleutian Trench, shape of a volcanic island arc, slab pull.

Branches of Science Packet, Branches of Science Concept Map

Brief History of Rockets Packet

Homework

On notebook paper, list any five (5) scientific “jobs” or disciplines. Then decide whether each job or discipline contributes to or could be considered a branch of Environmental Science. Explain why/why not for each example.

Read/highlight A Brief History of Rockets. Rocket diagrams due Friday (change from orig due date). Make changes ( if necessary) to your History of Rocketry and Space Flight bibliography.

Study Portfolio and vocab, especially concepts covered over the past 3 days.

6th Grade

7th Grade

8th Grade

Daily Launch

Turn in homework to INBOX.

Use a pencil to try and complete the concept map for Branches of Science on the last page of your packet.

2nd Period: Turn in Rocket History Bibliographies.

All: Read/highlight Newton's 3rd Law: The Action/Reaction Law Cornell Notes.

Set up paper and heading for today’s review. Title: Topic Review Notes

Daily Mission

Examine Branches of Science Concept Map. Discuss examples of  the type of work and historical examples from each discipline, focusing on individuals mentioned in reading packet. Topics covered: three main branches, physical science, two main types of physical science (chemistry and physics), physicist Alfred Nobel, liquid nitroglycerin, diatomaceous earth, diatom, other microscopic organisms.

2nd period: Meet with handful of students who still need further instruction regarding correcting and formatting bibliography.

Briefly review action/reaction force pairs. Continue to assimilate and average data from WBR lab.

3rd: Finish discussing content of an annotation (relevancy, currency, authority, content, bias/objectivity). Then discuss action/reaction force pairs, including analyzing hypothetical situations that might arise in microgravity.

4th Period: Normal fault, reverse fault, Afar Triple Junction, East African Rift Zone, rift valley, divergent boundary, oceanic-continental subduction between South American plate and Nazca Plate along Peru-Chile trench, Wadati-Benioff zone, seismic gaps, San Andreas fault.

5th Period: oceanic-continental subduction between South American plate and Nazca Plate along Peru-Chile trench, Wadati-Benioff zone, seismic gaps, San Andreas fault, Farallon plate and its remnants (Juan de Fuca Plate, Cocos Plate, Nasca Plate)

6th Grade

7th Grade

8th Grade

Announcement: There is no after-school tutoring tomorrow due to conferences! There will also be no tutoring next Tuesday (same reason)!

Daily Launch

Open a word document and type the correct heading. Title: Intro to Environmental Science Vocabulary

Get started on History of Rocketry Research Questions.

Look around on the Palaeos website. Read about the geologic time scale and learn about some of the events in each of the geologic eras, epochs, and ages.

Daily Mission

Visit the assignment page for today and carefully read over the assignment: Intro to Environmental Science Vocabulary.

Students will work on rocket history research and continue adding sources to NoodleBib. Students who have not yet turned in the revised NoodleBib list that was due Monday will be reminded and allowed to print it today in class.

Retake Web Quiz on Water Bottle Rockets

FCAT Explorer: Discuss finishing first pass, checking for unfinished questions, working on Challenge Questions, and starting on second pass. Discuss extra credit options for second pass (based on % correct).
