| Week of October 12-15, 2009 | | Science Fair: All Research Plans are due this Thursday, Oct 15th. Official ISEF Forms are available on the Science Fair section of our class website. Students can type directly on these form and save them on their computer or on a flash drive. This makes revisions and changes super-easy! Remember that all signatures and hand-written info must be completed in blue, non-erasable ink!!! 8th Graders: Next FCAT Explorer Science Voyager Report is due this Thursday, Oct 15th! Dates: 10/3-10/15 | | Monday, October 12, 2009 | | | 6th Grade | 7th Grade | 8th Grade | | Computer Lab Day | | Daily Launch | Students who need to retake the Variables and Hypotheses Test (Revised) should do so FIRST, before going on to today’s mission. | ALL: Work on Chemical Symbols (Basic) on FreeRice.com until you earn 1000 grains of rice. Record your start time, stop time, and elapsed time on the roster on the back table. | | Daily Mission | Science Fair: Continue to research your project. As you research, write all research notes directly in your logbook. Make sure you are documenting sources in NoodleBib and printing copies of sources for your reprint file. | | Students will log into flynts.pbworks.com and learn about wiki pages. Students who have never been exposed to wikis will complete an “Practice Wiki” to learn how to build a wiki page. When creating your practice page, remember to select “more options” and put it in the 2016 class folder and use the New Student 2009-10 template. | Finish on Rocketry and Space Flight Study Guide #1. You need to research each question and highlight the correct answer. Be sure to SAVE YOUR WORK and PRINT OUT A COPY!!! Go to PBwiki site and make sure your student wiki page (technology portfolio) is linked with your name on the student pages. If I taught you last year, DO NOT CREATE A NEW STUDENT PAGE! | ALL: Retake Plate Tectonics Progress Monitoring Quiz. Go to National Geographic’s Forces of Nature interactive lesson on Earthquakes. Make sure you have finished all 7 lab exercises and reviewed at least three of the case studies. When everything else is done, you may work on FCAT Explorer. | | Handouts | | Study Guide #1 History of Rocketry and Space Flight | | | Homework | ALL: Make sure Science Binder is organized. | ALL: Complete Study Guide #1. | Next FCAT Explorer Report is due this Thursday! Dates: 10/3-10/15 (unless you used different dates on your last report due to an absence). | | Science Fair: All Research Plans due this Thursday! | | Tuesday, October 13, 2009 | | | 6th Grade | 7th Grade | 8th Grade | | | | Daily Launch | Binder Check. Students will use rubric to self check their binder for organization and fix any issues. | Read/highlight Is Space Exploration Worth the Cost? Homework Check: Study Guide #1 History of Rocketry and Space Flight | Take out Structure of Earth classnotes. | | Daily Mission | Pop Corn Lab. Students should be able to conduct 4-6 trials today. | Calculate how much each student spends per day on single serving packaged drinks (can of soda, bottle of water, bottle of Gatorade). Determine class averages per week and per year for this same cost. Compare to how much people spend on alcohol, cigarettes, dog toys, etc. Compare these figures to how much taxpayers spend per day on NASA. Review answers on Study Guide #1. | Classnotes on use of seismic waves to provide indirect evidence of Earth’s internal structure. Topics: types of mechanical waves (sound waves, ocean waves, seismic waves), non-mechanical waves (electromagnetic waves), transverse waves, longitudinal (compression) waves, wave propagation, how density and elasticity effect wave velocity, shadow zone. | | Handouts | Binder Self-Check Rubric | Is Space Exploration Worth the Cost? Altitude Tracking handout | Look for classnotes in your mailbox. | | Homework | Begin writing a detailed list of procedures for Pop Corn Lab. Due Thursday. | Read/highlight Altitude Tracking handout. | Start cleaning up/organizing Earth’s Structure notes. | | Science Fair: All Research Plans and all forms are due Thursday! Bring log book every day this week! | | Wednesday, October 9, 2009 All classes: Meet in Computer Lab 109 tomorrow! Bring flash drives if you have them! | | | 6th Grade | 7th Grade | 8th Grade | | | | Daily Launch | Clear tables and prepare for lab. | Review answers to Study Guide #1 with group members. | List all vocabulary from Structure of Earth Notes as well as from yesterday’s notes on Seismic Waves. | | Daily Mission | Pop Corn Lab. Students will conclude testing today, and then begin processing their data by calculating the elapsed popping time for each kernel. Mathematical focus: review rules for addition and subtraction of compound time units involving minutes and seconds. Students will also practice converting all measurements to seconds. | After checking answers with group, students will list controversial questions from Study Guide #1: History of Rocketry and Space Flight in the board. We will go over each of these questions in detail, explaining what each question in asking and reviewing any concepts involved. Students that answered the question correctly may be asked to explain what techniques or keywords allowed them to locate the necessary information. | Students will draw and label parts of a transverse wave, including the crest, trough, midline (rest position), and wavelength. Students will also draw and label compression and rarefaction for longitudinal waves. Students will model transverse and longitudinal waves using a slinky. Students will also use the slinky to show why transverse waves (p-waves) cannot pass through a liquid and why compression waves (s-waves, sound waves) can. | | Handouts | | Study Guide #1 History of Rocketry and Space Flight | | | Homework | Non-Science Fair: Finish writing/typing a detailed list of procedures for Pop Corn Lab. Due Tomorrow! If typed, upload to class website or save to a flash drive! Meet in Computer Lab 109. | Non-Science Fair: Complete Making Sense of Water Bottle Rockets WS. | Non Science Fair: FCAT Explorer Science Voyager Reports due tomorrow. Date: 10/3-10/15 (unless you used a different end date on your last report). Upload Salazar letter to class website or bring it on a flash drive. | | Science Fair: All Research Plans and all forms are due tomorrow! Bring log book every day this week! | LINK TO REST OF THIS WEEK
