MISSION CONTROL: Classwork & Homework » Week of Sept 29-Oct 2

Week of Sept 29-Oct 2 Week of Sept 29-Oct 2

Week of September 29 – October 2, 2009

Science Fair: Research your project and start working on your Research Plan. Write the problem and hypothesis for current topic idea in your log book. Try to identify the independent, dependent and controlled variables. Start making a list of materials and procedures. Make sure you are documenting sources in NoodleBib and printing copies of sources for your reprint file. As you research, write all research notes directly in your logbook. Log books will be checked each Friday.  Remember that log books should reflect rough drafts and changes to topics, ideas, etc. The log book is NOT a perfect, “final draft” document, so don’t get nervous about what gets written down. EVERYTHING gets written down, even if it all changes later!

8th Graders: Next FCAT Explorer Report is due this Friday! Custom Report dates: 09/19/2009-10/02/2009.

Computer Lab Day

Daily Launch

If you did not hand in your agenda and/or science fair log book on Friday, do so at the beginning of class today. Make sure your name is CLEARLY indicated on the first page of your agenda.

Turn in Great Quake Shake Up WS (with your initial project predictions) to Mrs. Flynt. She will hand it back in a few minutes.

Daily Mission

Science Fair: Research your project and start working on your Research Plan, including materials and procedures. Make sure you are documenting sources in NoodleBib and printing copies of sources for your reprint file. As you research, write all research notes directly in your logbook.

If you did not finish your test on Friday, you must start over today.

See Mrs. Flynt when done with test.  You may be required to neatly re-type your 10 hypotheses and use color and different lines to identify the independent and dependent variables.

When you have submitted your improved hypotheses assignment (if required), you may start working on your Environmental Science Binder Cover Page.

See Mrs. Flynt when done with test. You may be required to neatly re-type your 10 hypotheses and use color and different lines to identify the independent and dependent variables.

When you have submitted your improved hypotheses assignment (if required), you may then start on History of Rocketry Research Questions. Use NoodleBib to cite your sources!

Today you will start on Great Quake Shake Up Follow Up WS. Look for patterns that relate quakes to the processes that may be causing them. ow How are quakes related to plate boundaries? Which types of boundaries produce the most quakes? Do some quakes happen far from boundaries?  Check out the links below to help you answer the questions on today’s handout. Remember that your final project grade includes a letter to Secretary Salazar answering his initial questions (and hopefully saving your job)! Worksheet and letter will be DUE next week!

Homework

Science Fair: Research your project and start working on your Research Plan.

ALL: Complete “Writing Hypotheses” assignment if you have not done so already!

6th Graders (non Sci Fair only): Work on Enviro Science Cover Page. DUE FRIDAY!

Quake Plotters: Outline or highlight dots in blue if the earthquake occurred near the surface (less than 100 km) and use red if it occurred deep (greater than 100 km) in the earth. You can find the depth measurements in your data tables.

Daily Mission

Current Events Assignment: Students will continue working on science-related current events reading and research assignment (follow link for details).

Mrs. Flynt will meet with Science Fair folks to review handouts/info that has been given out so far, review use of log books, discuss log book checks, and go through requirements for the Research Plan. All students will receive hard copy of Research Plan Format and Guidelines handout as well as Research Plan Bibliography handout. Other forms that students should be using include Science Logbooks HO and Researching Your Topic HO.

Discuss concept of geologic time and how 2000 years can constitute an “instant” in geological time, how only 6 feet of plate motion might occur over a human lifetime.

Briefly introduce the layered structure of the Earth and the indirect seismic evidence that supports our current model for the Earth’s structure.
