WHO AM I?

  • My name is Jennie Akins Flynt, and I was born and raised in Athens, Georgia. I'm a Bulldog by birth and Gator by marriage!
  • I am a passionate, enthusiastic teacher who loves to explore, experience, and understand the natural world around me.
  • I come from a family of teachers. My husband, Mr. Luke Flynt, teachers Gifted Language Arts here at GMS! My mother, Mrs. Ronette Akins, recently retired from teaching  in June, 2008 (she taught at Highlands Elementary School). I also have several aunts, uncles, and cousins that teach and work throughout the district and the south.
  • In addition to our "family" of current and former students, Mr. Flynt and I share our hearts and time with two boy cats, Joey and Alex Tangs (both named for former Colorado Avalanche hockey players).

MY GOAL AS YOUR TEACHER:

  • My primary goal is to create a sense of wonder and curiosity that will stay with you long after you leave my classroom.
  • I strive to design activities that will make you a better thinker, problem solver, and self-actualized learner.
  • I use a variety of organizational strategies in the classroom, and I will support and encourage you as you develop your own techniques and strategies.
  • I encourage the use of technology and hope to provide you with valuable experience using technology appropriately and efficiently to support learning and communication of ideas.

MY BACKGROUND:

  • I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the College of Charleston in South Carolina, and completed the pre-Veterinary Medicine program at Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado. I also have a minor in Religious Studies.
  • I earned my degree in education from Indian River Sate College, and finished my Gifted Endorsement in June 2009.
  • I worked as a Geologist and as an Outreach Educator for the National Park Service in Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, Maine, and then in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in Gunnison, Colorado. Yes, I used to wear that funny Park Ranger hat, and once I even dressed up as Smokey the Bear!
  • When on furlough from the National Park Service, I worked as a veterinary technician at a large and small animal hospital in Gunnison, Colorado. Our patients included everything from dogs and cats to cows, horses, goats, lamas, alpacas, bison, yaks, and many other exotic large and small wild and domestic critters. I later worked for the Humane Society in Fort Collins, CO.
  • I moved to Florida in 2004 to be closer to my family and to pursue a career in teaching. I moved here just in time to enjoy a real-world meteorological extravaganza during the 2004 hurricane season!
  • This is my sixth year teaching middle school science, my fourth year at Gifford Middle School, and my third year teaching Gifted Science.
