Chandra Uncovers Youngest Supernova in Our Galaxy The most recent supernova to occur in our galaxy exploded onto the scene about 140 years ago, according to a press release from NASA on May 14th. It was discovered by tracking the rapid expansion of the explosion's remains. This result, using NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory's Very Large Array, will help improve our understanding of how often supernovae explode in the Milky Way galaxy. Phoenix Mission Ready for Mars Landing NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander is preparing to end its long journey and begin a three-month mission to taste and sniff fistfuls of Martian soil and buried ice. The lander is scheduled to touch down on the Red Planet May 25! MESSENGER finds Evidence of Iron "Snow" in Core of Mercury New scientific evidence suggests that deep inside Mercury, iron "snow" forms and falls toward the center of the planet, much like snowflakes form in Earth's atmosphere and fall to the ground. The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft in orbit around Mars has taken the first ever image of active avalanches near the Red Planet's north pole! Lunar Eclipse on Wednesday, 2-20-08In the late night hours of Feb. 20, 2008, a total lunar eclipse will dazzle the night sky. And this lunar eclipse may be worth staying up for, because it will be the last one until December 2010. LUNAR ECLIPSE! Click here for a great animation and what you should expect to see over the course of the evening. The action starts with partial eclipse beginning around 8:45 pm. The height of the total eclipse will occur from 10-11pm. NASA Might Shoot down Spy Satellite The U.S. military has issued aircraft advisories for a large area of the Pacific Ocean for the evenings of Feb. 20 and Feb. 21, setting off speculation that it will attempt to shoot down a wayward U.S. spy satellite on one or both of those nights. Mars Rovers Sharpen Questions About Livable Conditions The discovery of high concentrations of dissolved minerals in the wet, early-Mars environment by NASA's Opportunity rover leads scientists to speculate that microbes on Mars would have had a tough time developing or surviving. Delta II Rocket Launch Here is a great picture of the Delta II rocket that was launched on December 20th. Many of you watched ths rocket go up during bus dismissal on the last day of school before winter break.
