Welcome to Miss Smith's 2nd Grade Class! News from 2W Here is a brief overview of what we have been working on. A newsletter will go home each month. Reading: We have ended unit one in our reading books. We took our unit tests, and I am very pleased with the grades!! Reading tests will continue to be on Thursdays. Science: We have accomplished our first unit for science this year, which was on animals. In our next chapter, we will be learning about animal habitats. We will then be learning about matter and will be describing objects by their properties (solids, liquids, and gases). We will see how these properties are changed from one to another. Math: In math we have completed chapters 1-4. In chapter 5 we will be learning about 10’s, ones, and numbers up to 100. In chapter 6 we will learn about comparing and ordering numbers to 100. Social Studies: We reviewed looking at maps and globes to freshen up our geography skills. Currently, we are learning about traditions, relatives, ancestors, communities, and transportation in unit 1. In unit 2 we will be discussing Earth’s land and water. Religion: We have completed unit 1 in our religion books. All of our religion tests have been and will continue to be open book. Each night before the test, I will send home the book to study from. Please send the book back the next day so your child can use it during the test. Language Arts: We have reviewed endings of sentences. We have also worked on writing complete sentences and using commas to separate a series of three or more items in writing. Phonics/Spelling: We reviewed long and short vowels. We took a unit spelling test this week using all the words we have learned. I did not grade these. Spelling tests will always be on Friday. Book in a Bag: As I stated at open house, your child will have a week to finish reading their book. The book activity sheets that are in the folders are for your child to do at his/her leisure. Please make sure that if your child does complete an activity sheet, that they are only completing one activity sheet per book. I love seeing them completed and I let your child shine and show it off if they complete one. They also love to be able to pick out a sticker from my sticker treasure box! Important News: · Projects: One will be sent home monthly. The children will be completing projects in all subject areas. These projects count as test grades so please make sure that your child completes them on time. · Field Trip: We are excited to be having the Scotia-Glenville Traveling Museum visit us a few times this year! The children enjoyed learning about all different types of animals for our first visit, and are looking forward to our next visits from the museum in November and December! · Star of the Week: The children were extremely excited to start the Star of the Week this month! The children have enjoyed having visitors in our room and can’t wait for their turn to be Star of the Week! When it is your child’s turn, please make sure that you return the sheet to me that states who your child’s special visitor will be and what they will be doing with the class. Thank you, Miss Smith
