Welcome to Miss Smith's Class Spring Newsletter Dear Parents, The school year is flying by! Here is what we have been and what we will be learning: Math: During April and May, we will be learning about place value up to the thousands place, number relationships, three digit addition and subtraction, and fractions. In June, we will be learning about two and three dimensional shapes and spatial sense (congruence, symmetry, perimeter, and area). We will also continue to take timed addition and subtraction tests in order to prepare for third grade. Make sure to review flash cards nightly. Social Studies: We will continue to learn about our country’s history. The lessons will also include students learning about famous Americans, historic places in our country, and holidays. Science: We have been learning all about the Solar System! The children are very excited about their solar system projects. In May and June we will learn about plants. Religion: We have been practicing and learning about receiving the Eucharist for their First Holy Communion. The children are extremely excited! During May, we will be participating in the crowning of Mary. More information will follow shortly. Phonics/Spelling: We have been reviewing vowel combinations, consonant blends, r-controlled vowels, and word endings. The children have been doing a great job on their spelling tests! Please make sure that your child is spelling the spelling words correctly in their homework and that they are writing neatly. There will be another unit test (25 out of 50 words) during the week of May 7th. Reading: We finished Unit 4 in reading and are on the second story in Unit 5. Reading tests will continue to be on Thursdays. Please continue to have your child read at home each night. Writing: I have been having students answer the comprehension questions from their reading story in class and for homework. The responses should be in complete sentences. We will continue to work on using correct punctuation and grammar in writing. Important Information: · Wipes: Due to illnesses during the winter months, we have gone through most of our antibacterial wipes. I would greatly appreciate it if you could send in antibacterial (not Clorox) wipes so we have enough for the rest of the year. · During the month of May students may wear their white polo-style shirt with their dress uniform. If boys elect to wear the uniform shirt, a tie must be worn. Boys do not have to wear a tie with their polo shirt. On P.E. days students can wear their Saint Pius X P.E. shorts (navy athletic “knee length” shorts, not nylon or mesh shorts) to school. Also, for safety reasons sandals are not allowed. Thank you! · Any extra items for donation to the treasure box would be appreciated! First Communion: Rehearsals for First Holy Communion are on Tuesday, May 1st and Wednesday, May 2nd. Please send your child to school with extra snacks so they will have something to eat before rehearsal. Rehearsal Times: 9:30AM Mass: Tues. 3:30-4:45 Wed. 6:00-7:15 11:30 AM Mass: Tues. 6:00-7:15 Wed. 3:30-4:45 Thank you for your support and assistance! Sincerely, Miss Smith
