Welcome to Miss Smith's 2nd Grade Class! November/December News from 2-W Dear Parents/Guardians, We have had a busy first few months of school! Here is a brief overview of what we have been working on. Reading: We are almost finished with Unit 2 in our reading books. I am very pleased with the children’s reading scores! We will continue to have reading test on Thursdays. Science: We have completed chapter 3 in our science books on habitats. In chapter 6, we will be learning about matter. We will learn how to describe objects by their properties and about solids, liquids, and gases. We will then begin learning about sound, heat, and light. Math: We have completed chapters 5-7 in our math books. We have been learning about 10’s, ones, comparing numbers up to 100, and money. In chapters 8, 9, and 10, we will continue learning about money, and will begin learning how to tell time! Social Studies: We are learning about the Earth’s continents, countries, states, land, and water. In Unit 3 we will be learning about the working world. We will be discussing different types of jobs, trading, money, maps, and charts. Religion: We have completed chapters 5-7 in our Religion books. The religion tests will continue to be open book. I will send the religion book home with your child the night before the test so your child can review the material. Please also have your child practice looking for information in the textbook from the chapter review. In December, we will be learning about Advent and Christmas! Language Arts: We have reviewed how to combine two sentences using the word “and.” We have also learned that complete sentences include a subject and a predicate. We will be learning how to look up information in the dictionary and how to begin writing paragraphs. Phonics/Spelling: We have been reviewing vowel combinations such as oo, ue, ou, and oi, as well as r-controlled vowels. We will also begin having 15 words on our spelling tests! Book-in-a-bag: The children are doing a great job reading their book-in-a-bag books! Please make sure that you sign the reading record sheet inside your child’s book-in-a-bag folder after he/she has completed each book. If anyone needs another reading record sheet or more reading activities, please let me know and I will be happy to send more home. The children are doing a wonderful job on their activity sheets! Weather: Recess will continue to be held outside. As the weather gets colder, please make sure that your child comes to school each day prepared to play outside (with a coat, hat, gloves, etc.) Thank you! Advent Service Project: Please click in classroom news for details! As always, I greatly appreciate all of your support and assistance! I wish you and your family a happy and healthy holiday season!
