****For a list of required school supplies, please scroll below the following welcome message**** Welcome to middle school Social Studies and Spanish at St. Mary's Institute. Social Studies in grade 6 covers World History and grades 7 & 8 focus on American History. Students will study a variety of topics and will work on vital skills like writing, researching, interpreting maps & graphs, and keeping track of current events. In the course of our studies we will adhere very closely to New York State standards and curriculum content. Students in the 8th grade will spend part of the second half of the school year reviewing the material they learned in 7th grade. This will be in preparation for the 8th grade New York State U.S. History test that will be given June 3 & 4, 2010. Our Spanish curriculum also follows NYS guidelines and is designed to introduce students to learing a foreign language and help them acquire the proficiecy they will need to excel on the NYS Second Language Proficiency Exam that will be administered to the 8th grade during the 3rd week of June 2010.

Required Supplies: q Pencils and erasable pens. q One pack of lined 3X5 index cards. q Two 3-ring binders: one for Social Studies and one for Spanish. q Loose-leaf paper: spiral bound notebooks will be discouraged. q 2 portfolio folders to store and organzie returned assignments. q 4 full-size pieces of posterboard in white or light colors (avoid dark colors) Foam board is even better, but not required. q An inexpensive Spanish language dictionary. These can sometimes be found at the dollar store. q A small pencil sharpener. q A pack of colored pencils. q Paper to make book covers: we will not be allowing fabric book covers again this year (they destroy book bindings).
