Reading and Social Studies with Mrs. Hazen Quote of the month: " To teach is to learn twice." - Joseph Joubert Reading: Sixth graders read an expository non-fiction piece about the rain forest and completed an expository non-fiction activity. This activity helped improve reading, writing, and speaking skills. Students also read a true story about a clever crow in the story When Crowbar Came, by Jean Craighead George. A quiz, in addition to several in-class assignments, concluded this unit. All students seemed excited to begin our new read-along book, The Egypt Game. This is a fictional mystery novel and correlates nicely with our Social Studies unit on Ancient Egypt. Social Studies: The sixth graders are still in Egypt and seem to enjoy what they are learning. I have had several students bring in books of their own to add to my varied collection about Ancient Egypt! They also worked hard creating informational posters about the female pharaoh, Hatshepsut, and wrote their names in hieroglyphics. We are also very excited to listen to our special Egyptian speaker who will visit soon. Please come visit the 6th grade stairwell to view some of this great work! We plan on entering the Indus River Valley region soon and will learn about India's geographical features, complex religious belief system, and culture. I am hoping to enter the Dynasties of China before November comes to a close, so students will be "well-traveled" before Thanksgiving break.
*Attention 6th Graders: A VERY interesting exhibit is coming soon to the Detroit Science Center! Are you interested in learning about mummies?
