Social Studies/ Reading - Mrs. Hazen

Reading and Social Studies with Mrs. Hazen Reading: Sixth graders will begin working on Newbery honored and awarded book reports. There are a variety of wonderful choices and my hope is that boys and girls enjoy their selections. This is a "meaty" assignment, so please ask your son or daughter to share their instruction sheet and rubric, which will be given out on Monday, February 6th. Students completed their Greek Myth writing activity by following the Writing Process, which leads to great writing! Creativity and originality were evident in many of the myths and are on display in the 6th grade hall. They also spent part of January practicing test-taking strategies and continue to read a large variety of non-fiction material. Time for Kids magazine remains an important tool for comprehension activities and graphic organizer note-taking continues to be part of weekly lessons. Look for Literature Circles, coming toward the end of the month! Social Studies: Sixth grade boys and girls are slowly leaving Ancient Greece. They have learned about the geographical features of Greece, the first Olympic games, Greek culture, and Democracy. Students also participated in a heated "speed debate" featuring the ancient Athenians and Spartans. This was a very loud and fun day of learning! They are also creating their own Olympic game and we look forward to taking part in a handful of these games during classtime. Sixth graders will enter the Land of Italy and medieval Europe before the month is over. The Geography Bee was a big success! Congratulations, once again, to all sixth grade students who worked so hard. Our map skills and understanding of the world around us was enhanced with this exciting activity. Don't forget our annual heart-shaped lollipop sale! All $ goes to Nothing But Nets.
