Educator Center » Counseling Referral Counseling can take many forms and serve many purposes. The duration, frequency and intensity can range greatly. Sometimes a brief talk is all a student may need. I am always here for those situations. In fact I frequently conduct conflict mediations for students in the High School and Elementary School. However, if you feel one of your students could use more regular contact with me then complete the staff section of the file below. Return the form to me and I will review it. From there I will gather the guardians perspective and make a determination what the next step will be. Option 1 - I determine counseling might be beneficial. We will then collaborate to conduct observations of the student. This will provide us baseline data for the effectiveness of the counseling intervention. Typically option one will be small group counseling among a variety of peers. Option 2 - If we have utilized a counseling intervention and it has proven ineffective we will then either try a different type of counseling or refer the student to the S-BIT team. This may include short term individual counseling for a period of six to eight weeks. Option 3 - If the second counseling intervention or S-BIT counseling intervention are ineffective then we will look into testing and possible IEP counseling. The IEP counseling will often still be in a group, but may also include individual counseling.
