As the new School Counselor at Little Falls Middle School I am still learning about how we transition our students.  Below are a few links and notes about what I am aware of so far.  I have also included some links to resources I have found useful and been influenced by.  

5th to 6th Grade Transition

• Spring Visit to the Middle School by the incoming sixth grade class
• Summer Parents Night held each August for incoming sixth grade class 

8th to 9th Grade

The 8th to 9th grade transition marks the beginning of the final stages of secondary education.  One way some schools prepare students to make the most out of High School is thru a transition course such as http://www.freshmantransition.org/ .  In many schools the important information is covered in the 7th grade Home and Careers course and Classroom Guidance Units taught by teachers or school counselors.  However, a concerted effort to infuse the material into the curriculum of core courses is necessary.  Such programs have proven to improve a multitude of issues from student dropout rates to students returning home after college.  Learn more at www.academicinnovations.com.
