Academic Information » Special Needs Every student is unique and has special needs. Many students develop their own coping mechanisms, while others may need a helping hand. Below are a few resources that may be useful if your student is struggling to develop coping skills in an area of their Social/Emotional, Academic or Career development. Please note , each of the below processes are being revamped and we value any input you may have about the process. Child Study Team/School Based Intervention Team - At times educators and parents see students floundering and do not know what to do. Often the best thing they can do is collaborate with each other. So if you know of a struggling student, contact their teacher. They are the first line of defense and have a number of great strategies to use with the students.
- If those efforts are not enough the next step is to work with the Child Study Team, also know at some schools as a Response to Intervention or School Based Intervention Team. This process is currently being revised at Madison. However, the overarching theory is to support students sooner rather than wait until things become more complicated. Ideally a student challenge (academic or social) would be recognized quickly, data would be collected to support the observation and finally an intervention would be provided to help support the student. If these efforts do not result in sufficient progress, then testing and a referral to the Committee for Special Education might be recommended. However, we always strive to help the students in the least restrictive environment by starting with small interventions via the Teacher and Child Study team in the hopes of preventing a challenge from snowballing into a larger academic issue that might require an Individuallized Education Plan.
- In some circumstances a behavior may be so intense that it adversly affects a students ability to learn. In this case a Functional Behavioral Assessment would be conducted. It often involves additional resources outside the current team, that may include the school nurse, counselors, principal, etc. For more information on that process see below.
