1. Odd numbers-  numbers ending in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9

 

2. Even numbers-  numbers ending in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8

 

3.  >   - symbol for greater than

 

4.  <   - symbol for less than

 

5.  =  - symbol for equal to

 

6.  Sum-  answer to an addition problem

 

7.  Difference-  answer to a subtraction problem

 

8.  Product-  answer to a multiplication problem

 

9.  Quotient-  answer to a division problem

 

10.  Digits- symbols used to write numbers

 

11.  Addends- numbers being added

 

12.  Divisor-  the number doing the dividing

 

13.  Dividend- the number being divided

 

14.  Operation-   addition, subtraction, multiplication, & division are examples of  mathematical operations

 

15.  Equation-  a mathematical sentence with an equal sign saying that both sides   of the equal sign have the same value  

 

16.  Estimation-  an approximate answer

 

17.  mean-  the average number for a set of data

 

18.  median-  the middle number for a set of data

 

19.  mode- the number occurring most often in a set of data

 

20.  range- the difference between the largest # and smallest # in a  set of data

 

21.  variable-  a letter used to represent one or more numbers

 

22. algebraic expression- a mathematical expression with one or more variables

 

23.  factor- a number that divides into another number without  a remainder

 

24.  divisible- a number is divisible by another number if the other number divides into it without a remainder

 

25.  prime number- a number with only to factors, 1 and itself

 

26.  composite number- a number with more than two factors

 

27.  prime factorization- writing a composite number as a product of prime numbers

 

28.  factor tree- a diagram that shows how a composite number breaks down into its prime factors

 

29.  Greatest Common Factor (GCF)-  the GCF of two or more numbers is the largest factor shared by all the numbers

 

30.  multiple-  the product of a number and any whole number

 

31.  least common multiple (LCM)-  the LCM of two or more numbers is the  smallest number that is a multiple of those numbers

 

32.  fraction- part of a whole

 

33.  numerator-  the top number in a fraction

 

34.  denominator-  the bottom number in a fraction

 

35.  equivalent fractions- fractions that have the same value

 

36.  proper fraction-  a fraction whose numerator is less than the denominator

 

37.  improper fraction-  a fraction whose numerator is larger than the denominator

 

38.  mixed number-  a fraction and a whole number

 

39.  simplest form- a fraction whose numerator and denominator have no common factors other than 1

 

40. Least Common denominator (LCD)-  the LCD of two or more fractions is the least common multiple of their denominators

 

41.  reciprocal-  two numbers are reciprocals if their product is one  4/9 is the reciprocal of 9/4

 

42. exponent- tells how many times the base is used as a factor

 

43. angle- a figure formed by two rays sharing a common endpoint

 

44.  vertex- the common endpoint shared by the two rays of an angle

 

45. right angle- an angle whose measure is exactly 90 degrees

 

46.  acute angle- an angle whose measure in less than 90 degrees

 

47.  obtuse angle- an angle whose measure is greater than 90 degrees but less than 180 degrees

 

48.  straight angle- an angle whose measure is exactly 180 degrees
