What We Are Learning
Math and Reading

 

 

This area of the site will list the concepts your child will be working on in math and reading. You will also recieve a paper copy of it at the beginning of each chapter.
 

 

 

*****************Th. 2 Reading Goals (Week 1)***************** 

Surprise

 

Phonics:

Consonants D,W,L,X

Students will review these kindergarten letters and the sounds they make. 

Sounds will recognize the sounds when used at the beginning and end of words.

 

Blending Short O Words

Students will blend VC (vowel, consonant) and CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words with short O.

Example Words:

Bob, ox, lot, mop, dot, hot, fox, pot, nod, cot

 

           

 (Remember the mini “paper books” that are sent home is the best way to practice these words with your child.)

 

 

 Vocabulary:

Making rhyming words using the following words:  pot, box

 

New Word Wall Words:

Upon   Five   Three   Four   Once   In   What   Two

 

Writing Skills:

Together the class will write a letter about what they did in school today.

We will be working on the date, greeting, body, closing, and signature.

Students will be reminded to use capitalization and ending punctuation.

We will also work on writing “full” sentences.

 

Comprehension:

Noting Details: 

Students will learn that details give important information.

 

Students will be asked to give details about stories and pictures.

 

 

Grammar:

Capitalizing Names:

Students will learn that all names begin with a capital and that the rest of the letters are lower case.

 

 

 

********Th. 2 Reading Goals (Week 2) ****************

Surprise

 

Phonics:

Consonants Y, K, V

Students will identify the sounds Y, K, and V at the beginning and when possible, end of words.

 

Short E Words

Students will blend VC (vowel, consonant) and CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words with short E.

Example Words:

Yes, wet, yet, Kev, bet, wed, red

 

(Remember the mini paper books that are sent home is the best way to practice these words with your child.)

 

Writing:

A Class Message:

Students will write a message to the librarian about the story Minerva Louise.  Students will be reminded to use a greeting, body, closing, and signature.

Students will also write a message to another first grade class about their day

 

Vocabulary:

Students will read and rhyme the words hen and wet.

 

 

New Word Wall Words:

Do   I   Me   Is   Said   For   My   You

 

 

Comprehension:

Fantasy and Realism:

The class will discuss how things that happen in stories can be real or make-believe. 

Students will review other stories and choose whether they are real or fantasy.

 

 

Grammar:

Using Naming Words:

Students will learn that a naming word can name a person, place, thing, or animal.

Students will also learn that a naming word can be called a “Noun”.

Surprise

 

Phonics:   

Consonants Q, J, Z

Students will recognize these sounds at the beginning and end of words. 

 

Short U

Students will be blending and reading VC and CVC words with short U.

Example Words:  jug, buzz, bud, run, fun, dug, tub, hum, nut

 Writing:

The class will write 2 journal entrees.  

 

The first will be about one thing that happened to them during the day and how they felt about it. 

They will need to begin with the day of the week and write in complete sentences.

 

The second will be a weeklong diary about a character in our story.

Again, remembering to begin with the day of the week and writing in full sentences.

 

Vocabulary:    

Making rhyming words using:  Dig, Bug, Cut

 

New word wall words:   

Are   Away   Live   Does   Pull   They   He   Where

 

 

Grammar:

Using Action Words:

Students will learn that an action word tells what someone does.

They will also learn that an action word can also be called a “Verb”

 

Comprehension:

Story Structure:

Students will learn that authors often follow a plan when writing a story.

Student will use the following topics in a story map to record what happened in the stories they read:

Who? ---à Characters

Where? ---à Setting, where the story happened

What is the problem?

How is the problem solved?

 

 

 

Math

Math Goals for Chapter 2

 

-Number Grids (counting up and back)

 

-Telephone numbers (students must learn their own number and emergency 911)

-Compliments of 10

-Analog clocks (introduction)

-Telling time to the hour

-Pennies (know what it is and be able to count it.)

-Nickels (know what it is, exchange for pennies for nickels and nickels for pennies)

-Counting nickels and pennies together.

-"Change to" models.  CLICK ON CHANGE TO DOWN BOTTOM TO SEE EXAMPLES.

-Number Stories (student will have to solve and create short number stories)

Th 2 Reading

Our new reading theme is "Surprise!"

Reading goals for theme 2:

-blending 3 and 4 letter words with one vowel

-consonants D, W, L, X, Y, K, V, Q, J, and Z.

-vowels short O, E, and U

-Decoding, questioning and summarizing stories read.

-Noting details in a story.

-Recognizing high-frequency words from word wall books.

-Capitalizing names in a sentence.

-Using naming and action words in writing.

-Writing letters using a date, greeting, body, and closing.

-Writing a diary.
