BHS Outdoor Winter Sports Curriculum Overview

Outdoor winter sports consists of 5, 85 minute classes of Snowboarding and X-Country Skiing.  Students begin the 5 class block with two days of cross-country skiing that takes place throughout the campus of Brockport Central Schools as well as the campus of the SUNY College at Brockport.  Students are introduced to various skills such as the diagonal stride, double polling, downhill strategies as well as uphill strategies such as the herringbone.  The third day of class is an introduction to snowboarding.  The first half of this class is held indoors on wrestling mat's.  In this portion of class, students learn what type of rider they are (regular or goofy), how to size a board and select boots.  Students also learn basic ground maneuvers, and how to use edges.  During the second half of the class period, students go outside where they, on small beginner hills begin to learn how to "Skate" across flat terrain, and how to do basic glides down gentle slopes.  On the fourth and fifth classes of Outdoor Winter Sports, students are bussed to Northampton Park Ski Hill, which is operated and maintained by Swain Ski Center.  At Northampton, students learn basic techniques such as toe/heal slides, the falling leaf technique, rope toe operation and heal/toe turns.

All classes should plan to go outside unless the temperature or wind-chill dips below zero.  All students should plan on bringing the following:  Hat, mittens/gloves, jacket, snow pants (if you don't have snow pants, bring an extra pair of pants to go over the top).
