Guidance Programs & Services

The following programs and services are available for our students during the school year:   For further information please refer to the contact person noted following the summary.

PROGRAMS

Stokes:  In the Fall and Spring, approximately fourteen students (7 males and 7 females) are selected to act as counselors for our Grice Middle School stundents.  (There is only one application process that is held in the Fall.)  The selection process involves a screening process by counselors and administrators.  Student counselors must be juniors or seniors, have average or better grades, have proven leadership skill, have good attendance, have a discipline record free from any activity that would be deemed a safety or security infringement, complete application by due date, exhibit a positive self-image, be an excellent role model. Women Supporting Women:  In conjunction with the Hamilton Township School District, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Hamilton sponsors an Annual Women Supportin Women Teen Event. This event is held during late Spring during the school day.   Junior girls are invited by the counselors at their high school.  This program is designed to help teenage girls realize their potential for success in life. Activities through the day offer community based resources for a variety of professional, health, and business situations that life might present. Mini Medical School: Robert Wood Johnson Medical School presents the program. This program is tailored for sophomore, junior and senior students interested in medical careers who must be recommended by the faculty. The program involves six two-hour sessions beginning in late spring.  All sessions are held at the medical school in Piscataway from  approximately 7PM -9PM. Contact:  Amy Emmons, ext. 3341. 

Governor's School:  This is a state program.  Students attend for at least one month at a New Jersey college.  The students may study in one of the following areas:  Performing Arts and music; vocal, dance, and instrumental.The students are selected by the school.  Interested students can see classroom teachers. Boy's State:  Sponsored by American Legion, this program is for junior boys who are interested in participating in a training involving politics and  government.  It takes place at Rider College usually the end of June.  The boys are required to attend this overnight training for one week. Information is delivered in early March and announcements are made.  Interested students must apply and attend a personal interview. Participants are held in high esteem by college admission personnel. Contact:  Charles Ross, ext.  3342. 

Urban Teacher Academy:  The College of New Jersey's Summer High School Urban Teacher Academy is offered to high school juniors interested in pursuing careers in urban education.  This program is designed to attract students to the field of urban education through exposure to a world-class curriculum and hands on experiences that focus on teaching .  Contact:  Amy Emmons, ext. 3341

 

SERVICES:

C.O.R.E.:  This is a referral agency for parents who feel that their children might be having difficulty with substance.  All contacts and information are kept confidential.   Contact:  SAC counselor, ext.  3308.

I. & R. S:  This is a referral for students having difficulty with academics.  There is a case manager, a teacher who is assigned to the case.  Parents, teachers, and counselors may refer. Contact:  Angie Schwartz, ext.  3345.
