Homework is an opportunity to develop responsibility and to practice first grade skills. I hope that your child will begin to establish good study habits that will last a lifetime! Reading Tips For Your Child Here are some easy and practical ways you can increase your child's skills and love for reading. -
Read with your child everyday if possible. Give children something to look forward to by taking the time to read to them. If possible, read to them at the same time everyday. -
Have your child read out loud to you. Listen carefully and make sure you let them know what a great job they are doing. -
Take turns reading. You can read a section or page, then have your child read the next section or page. -
Even when your children can read on their own, keep reading to them so they can enjoy stories and books of different genres especially when they are too hard for them to read by themselves. Five Reading Strategies For Reluctant Readers I think that we would like to see our children pick up a book even sometimes before doing a chore around the house. I found these tips on a website by Marie Carbo that can help you get your children right on track. - Make reading a relaxing and low-key activity for a short part of the day.
- Read aloud some funny or interesting parts of your favorite book.
- Draw your child in with a riddle book for kids, a passage from Sports Illustrated, or a newspaper story.
- If your child likes a movie, see if it's based on a book, then bring home the book.
- For kids who have lost the motivation to read, use material that's intensely interesting to them. Your child may have to disassociate what he's doing at school with the act of reading something for fun.
National Education Association Math Tips! Along with the new math program Everyday Math, Overbrook will be concentrating on the mastery of math facts for the appropriate levels. Here are some tips to help achieve them. -
Start small! Using a few flash cards lets you see when and where a learner has success. -
Offer help and avoid struggle-If your child does not know the answer by the time that you count to 5 slowly in your head, tell them the answer and have them repeat the entire math fact aloud to you. -
Keep the sessions short. Repeating something two and three times in short, fun, and easy sessions gets better results than a long session. -
Make it fun. Try some on-line math games. I will be providing some fun websites to visit on my link page. Please have your children practice math facts Monday through Thursday for at least five minutes every evening. Please practice facts to 24. We will begin having fact tests on Fridays starting on October 2, 2011
