Religion- We will begin the year in the Family Life Series. This series focuses on familylife, personal growth, respect for life, Catholic Christian sexuality, and social living. We will periodically send home the book for you to review what we have covered in class. Social Studies- Health/Science- The year begins with Health. We start by looking at how to stay physically, emotionally, intellectually, and socially healthy. Then we will focus more on the 9 body systems with an intense study of the respiratory system. Language Arts- "Journey to Adventure" is the reading theme that we will begin with in the fall. The students will be exposed to some fun fiction stories like James and the Giant Peach and A Package for Mrs. Jewls. We will also read a nonfiction piece based on Matthew Henson's jouney to the Arctic. Along with these stories the students will be working on different reading strategies and skill. After each unit we will spend a week exploring the National Geographic Magazine about King Tut. Math- Our first unit in math is on Number Theory. The students will look at rectangular arrays factors, divisibility, prime and composite numbers, square numbers and square roots, and prime factorization. Our math is focused on understanding the language of math and making connections from one concept to another. We will be using performance tasks as another means of evalutating your child's progress. Writing- The first trait we will be working on is the trait of "Ideas." This trait emphasises the importance of having a clear focus, using strong details, and writing from your own experience. We will be using picture books and writing samples to help model this for the students. Spelling- Parent/child assignments will come home about once a week. These are the skills your child will be tested on later in the week. If they are struggling spend a bit more time with them until it is secure. A list of spelling words that will come home each week need to be practiced daily. Words to Learn test are normally on Thursdays with the Skills test on Fridays.
