December News

Religion- We are preparing our hearts to celebrate the birth of Jesus with a variety of Advent Projects during the month of December.  The 5th graders created Advent Calendars for one another.  Each day they will open a door to find out what their service will be for the day.  We will also learn about Our Lady of Guadalupe and Saint Juan Diego.  We will be working to help needy children with our Advent Project "Samaritan's Purse,"  and we start each week with an Advent Prayer Service with our fellow 4th graders.  Mrs. Kasper's Class is also working on a Christmas play with their kindergarten buddies. 

Social Studies-  It's all about the 13 colonies in Social Studies. 

Science-  We are almost to the end of our Variables Unit.  A test will be coming up soon.  The next science unit will be on Magnets, Motors, and Electricity!  Fun!  

Language Arts-   We are back in our Language Arts book, but we are also reading novels!  Our focus is on "animals of the wild."  Later in the month we will start our second National Geographic Unit on Animals of the Denali.    

Math-   Division, divisors, dividends, and quotients!  It's all about division in unit 4.  We have been working hard at using the traditional method of division with 1 and 2 digit divisors.  The students have found that estimation comes in handing when you are working with 2 digit divisors. 

Writing-  We are still working on the trait of Ideas.  The 5th graders have been doing quite a bit of writing in all areas of the curriculum.  Our next assignment will focus on their Saint.  We are still working on staying focused on the main topic and adding details to enhance our writing. 

Spelling-  Parent/child assignments will come home once a week. This sheet must be signed by a parent.  The skill on the parent sheet will be tested on Fridays.  A list of 10 "Words to Learn" are written in their assignment notebook. These words need to be practiced daily.  Please make sure your child is studying thier WTL.  Words to Learn test are on Thursdays with the Skills test on Fridays.
