Religion- We have been busy learning about the role models of our church....Saints.  The students each selected a saint to read and learn about.  They wrote a brief paper on their Saint.  They will also create a Power Point presentation on the life of their Saint and present it to their classmates.  Hopefully you all heard about our trip to Feed My Starving Children.  The students were able to package 16,200 meals during their time there.  They fed 44 children for a whole year....WOW.  It was a very powerful trip.

Social Studies- In Social Studies the students are studying the Southern colonies.  The road trip projects the 5th graders created helped them to learn about the history of the southern, middle, and northern region.  This knowledge will be extremely helpful as they dig deeper into the settlements of these colonies.

Health/Science-  We have moved on from the body systems and are now focusing on the respiratory system and things that will affect it.  We looked at what gases are in the air. We did a fun experiment determining the amount of oxygen in the air.  We talked about polluntants in the air and are now focusing on a specific polluntant that affects our air and our respiratory system.....smoking.

Language Arts-   We are wrapping up our literature books in language arts.  The groups are working on projects to share with the other book groups.  The students have been learning how to collaborate together to create a good discussion group.  They each have had specific jobs/roles to perform to help them become deeper thinkers when reading a novel.  Ask about the book they are reading.

Math-   Unit 2 had a lot of concepts for the studens to learn.  We worked on many different adding, subtracting, and multiplying strategies.  We really want the students to start understanding the process of math.  We have just wrapped up Unit 2 with a project and will now be starting Unit 3 on Geometry.

Writing-  Ideas is the first trait we will jump into.  We will spend a significant amount of time on this trait  because it is the foundation to all the other traits.  We will be using pictures books and writing samples to help identify the important aspects of this trait.

Spelling-  Parent/child assignments will come home once a week. This sheet must be signed by a parent.  The skill on the parent sheet will be tested on Fridays.   If they are struggling with this skill spend a bit more time with them until it is secure.  A list of 10 "Words to Learn" words will come home at the end of each week. These words need to be practiced daily.  Words to Learn test are on Thursdays with the Skills test on Fridays.
