Reading/Phonics/Vocabulary: We have been working on reading short articles from our student edition to review comprehension strategies, phonics skills and word recognition skills. I will be doing some assessments on letter/sound recognition and skills that will assist in grouping the children according to their reading levels. Once this process is complete it is my hope to provide time within our schedule for small group reading. This would be in addition to whole group reading lessons and independent reading.

Spelling Words: The children will be given weekly spelling test. These tests will be given each Friday unless noted (if we have short week due to days off I will let you know when our spelling test will be via your child’s planner). Each week the children will be given a list of spelling words. These words will include words related to our weekly phonics lessons and story selections. You will notice that this list of words includes “high frequency” words. This week I have given 10 high frequency words that we have reviewed in class through reading articles in our textbook, trade books and our poem “Fall Leaves”.

Religion: This week we completed Chapter 1- We Belong to Jesus’ Church. The children will be brining home “religion packets” as we complete each chapter. Please review the packet with your child, as they will be given a religion test in class. For many of the children, taking tests will be a new experience. I will be reading the religion tests to the class.

Math: We will complete the summer review section in our math books and continue with Chapter 1 “Exploring Data”. The children will be learning how to use a Venn diagram to sort objects as well a making and interpreting a tally charts. Each chapter in our Math series focuses on a problem solving skill. In this chapter the children will use words and pictures to compare and contrast objects.

Apples: This week we read Johnny Appleseed Goes a Planting. We took this opportunity to talk about the many different foods that come from apples. We created a tally chart together and discussed the results. Could you believe…the children liked candied apples best!

The first few days we great!

The kids seem to be enjoying their new classroom and classmates.

This week, we will be spending time each morning discussing our classroom rules as we continue to become farmiliar with our class routines.

Morning Routine: As your child comes into the class in the morning, I will be expecting them to conduct thier morning routines independently. I have posted a "Morning Routine" Sign on the board explaining each step. If you walk your child down to the room in the morning, please feel free to take a peek at it and encourage your child to independently perform each step. Also, please understand that our days will become very busy and it is important that the kids begin thier Morning Work as I too have my own Morning Work (attendance, lunch count, and reading through notes and mail from parents) to do so, I ask that once the bell rings you say good bye and allow your child to conduct his/her work. I know it can be difficult, however, it will be benificial to your child in so many ways. Thank you in advance for you support and understanding.

We will be "playing" some games throughout the week to reinforce letter/sound recognition and cooperation skills.

I am looking for some items for the classroom, if you have any of these that you no longer use and would be willing to donate them to the classroom, we would greatly appreciate it!
