Reading Comprehension: The children have been learning how to use their "eagle eyes" and look closely at pictures to better understand what they are reading. We have also talked about how identifying the sequence of events can help us better understand what we read. These are two of the strategies that I encourage your child to do as they are reading.

Phonics/Phonemic Awareness/Spelling: We are learning about the short i sound this week. The children will be listening for the short i sound in words as well as segmenting and blending words with short i, short a and digraph ck.

Math: We are starting the next chapter in our Math book. We will review counting, reading and writing numbers to 20. Our problem solving strategy that we will focus on is "Making a Table." When we are working on lessons focusing on the problem solving skill, I will "walk" through each of the steps (read, plan, solve and look back) with the class. It is so important that your child pay attention to what we are doing, as it can only benefit them when they must try problem solving independently. We have discussed the meaning of "how many" "most" "fewest" "how many more". Please reinforce the meaning of these words at home as it will help your child "figure out" what they need to find.

Religion: We completed Chapter 2, "We Gather to Celebrate Mass."  We discussed that the parish church is where we gather together as a community to pray. We also discussed the different times we gather in the church. Our class took a walk to the church and looked at some of the holy objects such as the alter table, crucifix, and statues. We will move on to chapter 3 "God's Word Teaches Us."

Reminders:

When sending in any payments for lunch, art lessons, field trips and etc. please make sure it is labeled with your child’s name (first and last name) and class. Thank you for your assistance with this.

The children are going out doors for recess each day unless it is raining. Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather.

This is what we are doing in class over the next few weeks:

Phonics/Phonemic Awareness: We will be reviewing the short  /a/ sound as in cat. We will also learn the sound for the digraph ck. The children will practice learning how to blend and read words with these sounds. We will also practice listening for these sounds in words. The children will have opportunities to work on "making words" and "word building" using the cvc and cvcc letter pattern.

Spelling/Vocabulary:  We will practice spelling, recognizing and reading words in isolation and in text. We will be learning the words for the following stories:

  • Mat the Cat
  • Quack

Reading Comprehension: We will take picture walks and make predictions as we read these stories. We will continue to practice using picture cues and illustrations to help better understand what we are reading.

Math: We will work in chapter one. The children are learning to explore data. We have used a Venn diagram, tally chart, and picture graph to answer questions that help us to compare and contrast information. We are also going to be reading in math to help learn how to problem solve. We will have our first chapter test as we complete this chapter. Please watch your child’s planner for when the test will be, as they will be assigned this as homework when the time comes. Thank you for your support.

Religion: We will begin Chapter 2 “We Gather to Celebrate Mass.” We will learn that the parish church is where Catholics gather as a community to pray, and especially to celebrate Mass.

Field Trip: On October 16th we are scheduled to go on our first field trip to Liberty Ridge Farms. We will be leaving St. Pius X School by bus at approximately 9:15. Please be advised the buses will transport only the students. We ask all chaperones to drive or carpool with other parents. Also please do not forget to pack a brown bag lunch on that day. Thank you in advance for your help.
