Important Information for our Classroom and Routine

Spelling Tests:

Each Monday, I will give your child a list of ten core words to study.  I give spelling tests on Friday.  Starting after the first report card, in November, I will start giving challenge words.  They will then have a total of fifteen words to study. I also give students a word of the week. The word is chosen from the curriculum we are working on. Your child can chose to study the word and the definition to earn up to 10 extra points on their spelling test. The word and definition will not be counted against them if they get it wrong.

Science:

Students will be using a web organizer to organize information, vocabulary words, and important things that they should know from the chapters. I will send this home as a review the night before science tests. Again it is your child's responsibility to bring it back the next day to use it as a "cheat sheet" for their science tests

Math:

We will be spending much of the year covering 2-digit addition and subtraction with renaming.  It is important that your child master the basic addition and subtraction facts.  I encourage you to use flashcards at home with your child as this will help them learn these facts. Student's will be given timed addition and subtraction tests throughout the year.

Religion:

This is a very important and special year for your child.  We will spend a great deal of time preparing your child for the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.  Religion test will be open book or may even be done in a group. I will send home the study sheets/chapter the night before a test to review, it is your child's responsbility to bring it back to school the next day to use.

Absences, Tardiness,Dismissal, Vacation:

If your child is absent due to illness or late coming to school, you will need to send in a written excuse upon his or her return. If your child is late they will need to check into the office to let Mrs. Lash know they are here and order lunch if needed. If your child is going somewhere other then his or her normal routine at dismissal, I need to have a note stating where your child is going. If you are planning on going on vacation and would like to request your child's missed work please inform me at least a week ahead of time.

Book in a Bag:

This year is going to be a little bit different with book in a bag.  Your child will pick a book out on Monday. Depending on the length of the book I will choose a day for the child to return it by or at least check in with me to let me know where they are.  Enclosed in the book in a bag will be a folder with another parent sign off sheet. PLEASE SIGN OFF AND GIVE ME FEEDBACK. Your child will recieve a sticker for their book chart if a parent signature is on the sheet letting me know that they completed the book. Also, included in the folder are book report activities your child can choose to do. If they choose to complete one, he or she will recieve extra credit that will vary from: a treasure box visit, being in the spot light, or something else that I choose.

Please remember you and I are a team and our goal is to provide your child with a successful year.  The lines of communication between home and school should be kept open.  Please don’t hesitate to contact me about any concerns or problems you might be having and we will work together towards a solution.
