2-3 CLASSROOM NEWS

Dear Parents,

Here is a brief overview of what we have been working on.  A monthly newsletter will go home at the end of each month.

Reading: We have ended unit one in our reading books.  We took our unit tests, and I am very pleased with the grades!!  Reading tests will always be on Thursday. I will also always send home the text the night before the test to be reread as homework.

Science: We have accomplished one chapter from our science books.  In this chapter we learned about animal groups, how animals grow and change, and how they stay alive. In chapter 3 we will continue learning about animals. We will learn about places animals live, food chains and webs, and end with how habitats change.  The following chapter will be on matter.  We will learn to describe an object by its properties, talk about solids, liquids, and gases.  We will see how these things are changed from one to another.

Math: In math we have completed lessons 1-4 and took our unit test.  We did a fantastic job on these!! In chapter 5 we will be learning about 10’s, ones and numbers up to 100.  In chapter 6 we will learn about comparing and ordering numbers to 100. Please remember starting in November I will start having addition and subtraction timed tests. Please review nightly with your child their basic facts using flash cards.

Social Studies: We reviewed looking at maps and globes to freshen up our geography skills.  We also completed unit 1 in which we learned how traditions, relatives, ancestors, communities, transportation, and keepsake all tie into our family.  In unit 2 we will be discussing Earth’s land and water.

Religion: We have completed unit 1 in our Religion books.  All of our Religion tests have been open book.  I send the chapter review home to study the night before the test; please send this back the next day so they can use for their open book tests.

Language Arts: We have reviewed endings of sentences.  We have worked on writing complete sentences, using subjects and predicates in sentences.  We learned that when you have a series of three or more things you use commas to separate them.

Phonics/Spelling: We reviewed all short and long vowels.  We took a unit spelling test this week using all the words we have learned. Spelling tests will always be on Friday.  Please keep in mind that after their first report card students will be tested on their challenge words as well as their 10 core words.

Book in a Bag: As I stated at open house, if your child is reading a chapter book, they will have all week to complete it.  If they haven’t finished it by Friday, they will then need to check in with me to let me know where they are in the book.  If it isn’t a chapter book, I will give your child two or three days to complete it.  The book report sheets that are in the bags are for your child to do at his or her leisure.  I love seeing them completed and I let your child shine and show off if they complete one.  Please only let them complete one report for each book in a bag book that they read.

Important News/Odd and Ends:

  • Projects: One will be sent home monthly.  I will be using a project in all subject areas.  These projects count as test grades so please make sure your child completes it on time. The upcoming project will be focusing on animals from science.

  • Read Aloud: I have been reading the Wayside School series to your children after lunch. I have finished the first book and they loved it! I am also going to start a whole class read aloud using the book Cavemen do Drive School Busses. Each student will have their own copy of the book.
  • Uniform: PE shorts many no longer be worn. Girls may wear dress pants as part of their dress uniform. Boys must be in a dress shirt and tie. White polo shirts may no longer be part of the dress uniform.
  • Treasure Box: Thank you for all the candy or toys donated to the classroom treasure box. It’s been a wonderful help. If you have anything that you do not know what to do with please feel free to send in it.
  • Student Teacher: Miss Henry has been coming into 2-3 for the past couple weeks now. She is a senior at Siena College and is completing an internship that requires 120 hours in an elementary classroom. We have been so very fortunate to have her help!

Lastly, I have enjoyed all of our days so far! Each child is unique in their own special way! Thank you for all that you do!  I kindly ask that you please remind students about how important it is to listen and follow directions. The classroom can get very noisy at times and I would appreciate your assistance at home following up on this. Have a wonderful weekend!

Thank you,

Ms. Sabatino
