I cannot believe it is already the middle of the school year! The growths your children have made are wonderful. Here is what we have and we will be learning:
Math- In chapters 12, 13, and 14 we have been and will continue to work on two digit number addition problems with and without regrouping. In chapter 15 we will learn to subtract one-digit number problems with and without regrouping. I am also going to continue doing timed addition test. I will begin to start subtraction tests, as well. It is imperative that they know their basic facts before third grade. Please practice these daily at home.
Social Studies- Students will learn about our country’s history and past. We will continue to talk and learn about African Americans and Presidents as the students start working on their next upcoming projects.
Science- In chapter 7 students will be learning about how forces change the way objects move. This will entail learning about friction and gravity as well as simple machines such as: the pulley and wheel/axle. In chapter 8we will be learning that many forms of energy have different properties our next chapter in science. The energy we will discuss is heat, sound, light, and electricity. After this will then be learning about the Earth and space. We will see how day and night is caused, why seasons happen, and understand how we can see the moon from earth.
Religion- We will continue to prepare for our First Reconciliation. This is a very exciting time for the second grade students. Please make sure the Act of Contrition is being reviewed at home.
During Lent I will have a can for the season collecting change for an organization in need. Also during this time as a class we will make a sacrifice and skip snack (just on Fridays) in keeping with Jesus when he fasted.During our normal snack time we will take the time to pray 1 decade of the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary.2-3 will also be going to the Church to learn about the Stations of the Cross.
Phonics/Spelling- We just finished up with long and short e, and silent letters. In our next few chapters, we will be learning the soft c, soft g, and aw, au, and augh sounds.Spelling tests are on Fridays of each week. I will continue to have a word of the week each week. This counts as a bonus for your child to spell the word correctly and write the definition. Also please make sure you are checking your child’s homework. I have seen quite a few homework assignments turned in with spelling words spelled incorrectly. This completely defeats the purpose of the spelling assignment. In order to prepare for third grade, at the end of each spelling unit, I will be giving the children a Unit test containing 25 words from the last 5 spelling tests. The children will not know the 25 words that will be on the test, so they will need to study all 50 of the spelling words they have learned on the last 5 tests. The children will not be tested on the challenge words, just on the first 10 words on each list. The first Unit test will be given during the week of February 1st.Attached you will find the list of words that your child needs to study from for this Unit test.
Reading- We will continue to read a story a week and take the tests on Thursdays.I will always send home the story to read on Wednesday nights for homework.
Writing- 2-3 has been practicing many different types of writing. This month we wrote another acrostic poem and soon after break will be writing a diamante poem.I am going to continue pushing students to write question responses in complete sentences. Please work with your child making sure his or her homework is being written in complete sentences. After talking with the third grade teachers they request second graders to have mastered this skill before coming into third grade.
