Dear Parents, Welcome to third grade! I'm looking forward to working with you and your child this year. Below you will find my goals, rules and policies for my classroom. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's progress during the school year, or any other information pertaining to your child. I look forward a wonderful school year. Deanna Quimby Goals I am working to establish an environment that: *Is safe, comfortable and respectful *Encourages students to be responsible for themselves and their actions *Acknowledges that mistakes are okay- they are learning tools Rules The Golden Rule: Treat others as you want them to treat you.
Be respectful-say or do nothing that will hurt or offend another person. Keep feet, hands and objects to yourself.
Be responsible- Have all books, materials, assignments here at school, completed on time.
Listen and follow directions the first time given.
Be curious- ask questions when you don’t understand something! * No student has the right to interfere with the learning environment or personal safety of another person.*
Classroom Management I use two forms of positive classroom management. These have worked effectively for me for the last few years. I recognize student behavior individually as well as whole class behavior. Individual- Each student will have a sticker chart(each chart has 25-30 spaces for stickers) on his/her desk. Students will receive stickers for good behavior (sitting quietly, completing tasks independently, not talking to other students, etc.) and answering questions in preparation for tests or quizzes (I usually ask review questions before a test or quiz and give stickers for correct answers). However, if a student misbehaves, he/she can get the sticker(s) taken off the chart. Once the sticker(s) is taken from the chart, the student needs to earn another for that spot. When the student has filled up his/her individual sticker chart, he/she may pick a prize from my prize box or choose to receive a No Uniform Pass. Whole Class- Behavior Bingo is a whole class behavior reward system. When students exhibit good behavior a number is drawn from a jar at random. The number is colored in on a hundred chart (our "Bingo Board"). Students decide on a reward once they get ten numbers in a row. Reward choices could be extra recess, longer snack time for a day, sit next to a friend, etc.
Homework Policy Homework is important because it teaches responsibility and helps students develop good study habits. In addition, homework helps to reinforce lessons that have been learned in class, and helps prepare students for upcoming lessons and tests. *Homework will be assigned four nights a week (Monday-Thursday). Students should also read independently for at least fifteen minutes a night as well as review their math facts . *Please sign your child's assignment book each night to make sure he or she has completed all assignments. Also, please check and sign each sheet of homework. Checking homework nightly will allow you to help your child if he or she is having difficulty with a particular concept. *I will try to keep this web page updated with homework assignments, but please remember that it is your child's responsibility to write down his/her homework assignment in the assignment notebook each day. *One folder will be designated as a homework folder. One side will be used for corrected papers and the other side will be used for homework assignments. Any notes from you can be put in the homework folder, as I will check it daily. Likewise, any notes sent from me will be placed in the homework folder. I will usually write a note the student's assignment notebook asking you to check his/her homework folder for the note. Incomplete Assignments If a student forgets to complete his or her homework, or forgets it at school a Missing Assignment Form will be filled out and sent home to be signed. The form and the assignment are due the next school day. If the assignment and or form are not handed in the next school day the student will miss recess that day. If a student receives three Missing Assignment forms in a term he or she receives a detention. The detention will be held the week the third Missing Assignment form is handed out. Detentions are served in the morning in my classroom, and usually last about forty-five minutes. Ways You Can Help *Read with, read to, or listen to your child read *Check and initial your child’s assignment book nightly as well as check and initial homework assignments *Review flashcards and spelling words with your child *Send me a note if you have any concerns, upsets, or praises that could help to make your child more comfortable at school. There are many times when I am unaware of recess upsets. Please discuss the situation with your child and encourage ways to work through the problem. If the problem persists, please contact me.
