Week of November 9th - We will finish up our chapter on data and graphing. The children will be reviewing tally charts, pictographs, and bar graphs. We will also do problem solving using graphs to help answer our questions such as how many more than and how many in all? Our chapter test will be on Friday. Please review the following vocabulary words: tally chart, pictograph, and bar graph. Week of November 2nd - We are beginning our next unit on data and graphing. The children will become familiar with recording tally marks, and reading and creating pictographs and bar graphs. Please practice writing tally marks for numbers up to 20. Week of october 26th - We will continue with subtraction in math this week. The children will practice subtraction in vertical form and write number sentences for problem solving. The chapter test for subtraction will be on Thursday. Please review the following vocabulary words: minus sign, equal sign, difference, and subtraction sentence. Week of October 19th - This week we will learn about the concept of subtraction. The children will be introduced to the minus and equal signs, learn to find the difference (the answer), and practice using zero in subtraction. This chapter focuses on subtracting from 8 or less. Week of October 12th - The children will continue with addition this week with problem solving activities. There will be a test on Friday so please have your child practice sums to 8 and review the following vocabulary words: plus sign, equal sign, addend, sum, and addition sentence. Remember, the addends are the two numbers that get added together and the sum is the answer in addition. Week of October 5th - The children will continue with addition this week. They will be learning the following rules: · When you add zero to a number, the sum is the same number. · You can change the order of the addends and get the same sum (4+2=6 and 2+4=6) · You can write the same addition fact both horizontally and vertically. Week of September 29th - We will begin this week in math with problem solving and our first chapter test on Wednesday. Next the children will begin learning about the operation of addition. We will focus on these new vocabulary words: add, sum, order, addend, + sign, = sign, whole, and part. We practice that 2 parts (the addends) make a whole (sum). An example of this is in your child’s practice math book on page 9.
