AP 2D Design Portfolio Concentration
Exams: 2005 Studio Art 2-D Design: Concentration -- Nathanael E. Faubion Frisco High School Frisco, TX

Rationale The artist uses the idea of calligraphy to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the principles of design. The individual works are visually stimulating and of high technical quality. The variety of concepts explored in the pieces shows original thinking by the artist, and the investigation shows a fresh, informed approach to design. Every piece is elegantly composed.

Student Commentary What was your initial idea? Letters are an art form in themselves. My concentration uses the shapes of letters and calligraphic line to form a new piece of artwork. Each one focuses on a specific letter in different forms to create the final result.

How did your idea grow and develop as you worked? You may refer to specific slides as examples. The slides are arranged as a progression from full color (slides 1-4) to black and white (slides 9-12). I originally planned for my concentration to be only distortion of letters (such as the "S" in slide 1), but quickly grew to incorporate more calligraphic line than just a distorted letter. Some pieces lay out a concreate shape of the letter (the "T" in slide 5), while others are slightly hidden and less distinct (the "L"in slide 12 and the "O" in slide 7).

* Important Note: The numbers of the slides run from top left to bottom right. 8" x 10" digital 8" x 10" digital 10" x 8" digital 8" x 10" digital 10" x 8" digital/ink transfer 16" x 10" digital 10" x 8" digital 8" x 10" digital 10" x 8" digital 8" x 10" digital 10" x 8" digital 8" x 10" acrylic/digital
