Back to School Information Back to School Information

Hello.  My name is Carol Gibson.  This year I will be teaching Math and Science to the sixth graders.  I received my B.S. from Purdue University and my M.S. from IUPUI in elementary education with a minor in music.  I am licensed to teach k-8 and music.  This will be my 28th year to teach school.  I have taught in the New Albany/Floyd County Schools, The Lawrence Township School System and St. Gabriel the Archangel School. During my career I have taught third grade and fourth grade, math fourth grade through algebra, science fourth through sixth and music k-eighth. I have received the Blessed Mother Theodore Guerin Excellence in Education Award and the Walmart Teacher's Award.  I have been listed in Who's Who of Teaching for four years.  I am married and have three adult children.  I love to read, travel and play the organ for church.

MATH

This year we will be using the Prentice Hall Math program.  Daily lessons will be assigned.  All lessons should be done in pencilNo credit will be given for an assignment that does not show work for problems requiring computation.  Extra credit problems will be offered each week. Tests, assignments, and quizzes will be averaged to determine the report card grade.

  SCIENCE

In science, students will use the Scott Foresman series.  There will be two or three assignments each week.  We will conduct experiments in class that reinforce science concepts taught in the chapters. Notes from class and science labs will be recorded in student notebooks.  Questions from the notes/labs will be on chapter tests. Notebooks will be collected and graded at the end of each quarter.  Several projects will be assigned throughout the year.  Some projects will be group projects completed in class, others will be individual projects which should be completed at home.  Parent input should be kept to a minimum.  Report card grades will be based on the average of tests, quizzes, projects, assignments, and notebook grades.

Any sixth grader who did not participate in Science Fair as a fifth grader, or who did not receive a passing grade for their Science Fair project last year, or is new to Saint Barnabas this year must participate in the school Science Fair on January 26th.   More information about the fair will be sent home in October, but students should begin to look for project ideas now.

A weekly Conduct Report will be sent home in the student's Friday Folder.  The student's conduct and missing or late assignments will be noted on the form.  In addition, upcoming tests, quizzes, and projects will be included.  Parents, please review the papers in the folder with your child, sign the conduct form and return the folder and Conduct Form each Monday.  It is a good idea to save all student papers each nine weeks until report cards are issued in case there are questions concerning grades.
