November 20, 2009

Reading:  We are finishing our School Stories unit with books by author, Andrew Clements.  With our AR goals, we raised $10.05 for the Wellington Orphanage in Sierra Leone, Africa for all of the AR points we earned in Sept., and almost $12 in October.  AR goals are due on November 30, so students will have time over the Thanksgiving Break to read more.

Math:  Hopefully you have been seeing the Math fact packets come home each week.  We've worked on x2, x3, x4, x5, and x10.  There will be NO packet sent home during the Thanksgiving Break.

Science:  SIMPLE MACHINES are awesome!  Students have had a great time with levers and pulleys, and we'll continue this unit for a couple more weeks.

Wyoming History:  Students are going to Mr. Krubeck for Wyoming History now.  They've been learning about the early peoples of Wyoming, theories and stories about their origins, and what life was like for early man.

Writing:  We will be focusing on leads and conclusions to improve our writing during Learning Academy for the next couple of weeks.  Students have learned how to make the reader "feel" what the writer is feeling through descriptive writing, and are working on a piece of fiction now using the Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg.

Spelling:  Research says students should practice for at least 7 days in order to cement the learning of Spelling words.  By getting a head start over the weekends, the success rate will be much higher.  Please be sure to practice Spelling words with your child every night.
