REASONS TO STUDY

FOREIGN LANGUAGE

AT CCS

Questions that I hear:  Why do I have to study a subject that I don’t like?  I am 15 or 16 years old and I already know that I will not use a foreign language, so why do I have to study it?  Or my favorite question of all time “Why don’t they all just speak American good like me?”.  I may not have the answers to these questions, but I will try to offer some ideas.

9.  We are living in an increasingly global economy as a minority with less influence in              the world.

8.  We need to know more of the diversity of cultures to respect these cultures, but not to necessarily agree that they are all equal.

7.  We have the problem of a very large immigrant population that must be dealt with aggressively or they must be assimilated into our society.

6.  Learning a foreign language has been shown to improve English skills.  The ABEKA Spanish I curriculum has at least 1,000 cognates alone.

5.  Learning a foreign language and diverse cultures can be fun.

4.  Two years of foreign language are required to graduate from CCS.

3.  Two years of foreign language are required for the TOPS program.

2.  Poor grades in any subject lowers the GPA and reduces opportunities of getting into the college of choice.  Universities are tightening admissions standards every day.

1.  Becoming immersed and understanding diverse cultures and their languages helps in efforts to spread the Good News, the gospel of Jesus Christ to the world.

Please make any confidential comments that could make the study of foreign language a rewarding experience.
