COMPUTER APPLICATIONS WAIVER EXAM

In today’s society, computer technology is at the core of every institution’s operations—be it a business or a non-profit entity.  Roncalli High School thinks it necessary that students possess skill in computer keyboarding, document processing, and basic spreadsheet application.  Some students may already possess adequate computer skills and do not need the introductory Computer Applications course offered at Roncalli.

To meet the needs of students, Roncalli offers a Computer Applications Waiver Exam

General Information

To earn a Computer Applications Waiver, a student must:

ü  Indicate his/her interest in taking the Computer Applications Waver Exam by contacting Mr. James Kedra, Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs.

ü  Achieve a minimum “words-per-minute” keyboarding rate of 30 net words per minute with three (3) or fewer errors on a 3-minute timed writing [ two 3-minute timings are given per exam session ].

ü  Achieve a score of 78% or higher on a 40-minute “Production Test” in which the student must produce two (2) basic documents (e.g., memorandum, business letter, short report, table) via word processing—5% points off per mistake.

ü  Achieve a score of 78% or higher in creating Desktop Publishing documents during a 40-minute period. (100-points @ 5% points off per mistake)

Notification of Exam Results

Each student participating in the Computer Applications Waver Exam will be notified by the Assistant Principal as to whether or not he/she successfully completed the waiver requirements.

It is possible for a student to “PASS” one or two portions of the 3-part exam during an exam session. In such an instance, the student will simply have to pass the remaining portion(s) of the exam during a subsequent exam period.  There is a MAXIMUM of three (3) Waiver Exam attempts before the student will be required to take the Computer Applications course.

No grade will be given to a student that successfully waives Roncalli’s Computer Applications course requirement.  A notation will be made on the student’s permanent school record that indicates his/her successful waiver of the requirement, and one (1) credit will be granted for Computer Applications.

Timed Writing ~

Using keyboarding software Micro Type Pro, the student will be given two 3-minute timed writing on which he/she must achieve a timing score of 30 net words per minute or higher.

The higher score of the two “timings” will count toward your Waiver Exam score.

Word Processing Production Test ~

Using many “Formatting” commands and features, the student will be given          40-minutes to produce at least one (1) formal document using Microsoft WORD 2007.

The document(s) will be two-of-three types:

¨       Formal Business Letter

¨       Formal Personal-Business Letter

¨       Memorandum (a “memo”)

¨       Unbound Short Report

. . . Be sure to know proper Top, Left, and Right margin settings ( in inches ).  Also, know proper line-spacing of each individual paragraph ( the body ) — and spacing between paragraphs for each document type.

A working knowledge of formatting “tools” is needed to complete the editing requirements of the Production Test:

Bold                               Margin settings               Header / Footer

Italics                              Indent                             Menu

Using Microsoft PUBLISHER, the student will be required to create one or more basic desktop publishing documents such as (1) advertisement flyer, (2) letterhead, (3) calendar, (4) greeting card, (5) newsletter, and/or (6) business card.

Basic information/data for the to-be-created document will be provided, and it is the student’s responsibility to properly create the document using MS Publisher 2007. Experience using Publisher will be particularly useful and will ease creation of the given document within the exam period.
