Summer Reading Instructions for Students Entering 4th Grade
Studies suggest that children who read as few as six books over the summer maintain the level of reading skills they achieved during the preceding school year. Reading more books leads to even greater success. When children are provided with 10-20 self-selected books at the end of the regular school year, as many as 50% of the children not only maintain their skills, but also actually make reading gains.
Research suggests that if children have opportunities to listen to, discuss, and read books on topics they select, or books about characters that they love, they develop extensive background knowledge that can strengthen their independent reading and sustain their engagement.

Rising fourth grade students at Overbrook School are required to read a minimum of three books over the summer and complete a written assignment for each of the three books. Students will read:
· the required fourth grade book
· one from the Core Classics list
· one from the reading options list
Students will keep a rating log (attached)on all the books they read and turn it into Mrs. Cianciolo the first day of school. They will also take an Accelerated Reader (A/R) quiz on these books the first week of school. In the free choice section, I have included the book level and A/R points for each selection. Students are encouraged to look back over the book before taking the A/R quiz.
