Curriculum Alignment Workshop Resources

The following resources were presented in the ELA curriculum alignment workshop at BMC on June 2-3, 2014 by Dr. Dorie Combs and Dr. Ginni Fair. Dr. Combs is the Chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Eastern Kentucky University. Dr. Ginni Fair is an Associate Professor at Eastern Kentucky University, and also teaches in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

Achieve the Core - This website is full of free content designed to help educators understand and implement the Common Core State Standards. It includes practical tools designed to help students and teachers see their hard work deliver results. achievethecore.org was created in the spirit of collaboration. Please steal these tools and share them with others.

Brainology - Information and tools on the growth mindset related to the work of Carol Dweck.

Common Core Appendix A - English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social studies, Science, and Technical Subjects

Common Core Appendix B - Exemplars of reading text complexity, Quality, and range & sample Performance tasks related to core standards

Digital History - Common Core tools support teachers as they implement the new literacy standards across content areas.

Grammar Girl - "Your friendly guide to the world of grammar, punctuation, usage, and fun developments in the English language."

Guys Read - a web-based literacy program for boys founded by author and First National Ambassador of Young People’s Literature Jon Scieszka. The mission is to help boys become self-motivated, lifelong readers.

Library of Congress Teacher Resource Site - The Library of Congress offers classroom materials and professional development to help teachers effectively use primary sources from the Library's vast digital collections in their teaching.

Literacy Teaching Assistant -  (Note some resources are free and some are paid.)

NewsELA - Newsela is free for students to explore a world of nonfiction and test their comprehension.

Read.Write.Think - Lessons, interactives, calendar activities, and more.

Text Project - TextProject aims to bring beginning and struggling readers to high levels of literacy through a variety of strategies and tools, particularly the texts used for reading instruction.
