My name is Amy Herndon.  I live in Bristol, Tn. with my husband (Russell, who was my high school sweetheart!), daughter (Mary Katherine 15), son (Marshall 9), and sweet poodle, Jackson 13.

I was born and raised in Bristol.  In 1990, I graduated from Virginia High School.  After 10 years at home with my children I graduated from Virginia Intermont College with a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies PreK-6.  I loved every bit of my college experience.

In 2005-2006, while I was completing my degree I was hired as a Preschool teacher working at Sullins Academy in Bristol, Va.

For the 2006-2007 school year, I was a first grade teacher at Marion Primary School.  My year was filled with great rewards.  I love teaching children to read!

My four years at Washington-Lee have been extraordinary!  The students quickly exceeded all my expectations.  They are amazing.  I enjoy working with the faculty and the parents to help make each child's year a success!

My daughter, Mary Katherine is attending Baylor School in Chattanooga.  She was a finalist for the Distinguished Scholar's Award.  Her hobbies include rowing "crew",dancing, and reading.  She was nominated to be a writing tutor at Baylor for her sophmore year. Currently she is a member of the Red Circle at Baylor and she acts as an ambassador for Baylor.  Mary Katherine also has the opportunity to serve as peer tutor for other Baylor students. She will also be on the Baylor CREW team this year.

Marshall is in the fourth grade at Washington-Lee Elementary.  He loves to play games, swim, cub scouts, T-ball, golf, football, basketball and spend extra special time with his daddy!

I always knew I wanted to be a teacher because I had compassion for all children.  My belief is that everyone is special and should be given an equal opportunity to make the world a better place.  After a few years of teaching and raising children of my own, I have come to believe that "fair is not always equal."  This is why differentiated instruction is important for the success of all students.

So far, my experience as a teacher has brought enough rewards to last a lifetime!  I can't believe how lucky I am to be able to go to work and see all the smiling, eager faces. One of my goals as a teacher is that each child when asked "Who is Mrs. Herndon's favorite student?" Would respond, "Me!"

A philosophy I teach by was once told to Winnie the Pooh from Christopher Robin, "You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think!" My hope is that each child will always remember this and build enough confidence in my classroom to last a lifetime!

One last thing I would like to share is the fact that I began a career hoping to touch and make a difference in many lives.  However, after becoming a teacher I quickly realized how my students and parents significantly touched and changed mine!

One of my favorite quotes:  You can teach a lesson for a day, but if you teach curiosity; you teach for a lifetime~
