Classroom Rules 1. Follow all school and classroom rules. (Including all rules in handbook) 2. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself at all times. 3. Treat others the way you wish to be treated. Consequences 1st Offense of the day-Warning (name written on board) 2nd Offense of the day-Card flip to yellow (Lose 5 minutes of recess) 3rd Offense of the day-Card flip to orange (Lose 10 minutes of recess) 4th Offense of the day-Card flip to blue (Lose all of recess and a note or phone call is made to parents) Severe Clause: If a severe offense is made (fighting, cheating, etc..) the student will automatically be flipped to blue and sent to Mrs. Perkins or Mr. Schnarr. In the Friday Folder, a conduct grade will be given. One point is taken off for each offense made that week. Students with no card flips get to pick a prize out of Mrs. Chastain's Treasure Chest on Fridays. Students with no card flips for the whole month, get a Dress Down Day. :) I encourage students to work together, so I have the students sitting in groups or teams. Teams can earn points for working together well, having all the appropriate materials out for the next subject first, coming in quietly from recess, lunch, switching, etc.., helping each other out if someone is behind or struggling,etc... We count points at the end of the month and the team with the most points gets a breakfast treat (Krispy Kreme donut and Milk or Juice). Individual students can also earn rewards. I give out "tokens" which are these little foam shapes. We count these at the end of the month too. Here are the rewards students can "buy" with their tokens: 25 tokens= Homework Pass and a Sit By a Friend Pass, 50 Tokens=Homework Pass, Sit By a Friend Pass, and Eat Lunch with the Teacher Pass, 100 Tokens=Homework Pass, Sit By a Friend Pass, Eat Lunch with the Teacher Pass, and a Sit at the Teacher's Desk for the Day Pass. Tokens can be earned for things such as: good behavior, clean desks, clean lockers, helping in the classroom, good scores or grades on tests and assignments, winning "Poof Be Gone", winning board races, winning math Bingo, bringing in items that the class needs such as paper towels, cleaning supplies, tissues, wet wipes, school supplies, bringing in items for clothing and/or food drive service projects, bringing in Box Tops, pop tabs, sharing, helping fellow students, cleaning parts of the room without having to be asked, etc... Procedures: All classroom procedures will be discussed with students on the 1st day of school. Only certain procedures will be listed on the website. If you feel something should be added to the website, please let me know. Homework Procedure: Usually homework is given every night except on a Friday. However, if there is a test or project due on Monday, students are expected to comply. Homework should last anywhere from 10-30 minutes depending on the amount and difficulty. Each student should have their planner signed every night. This is to ensure that the parent knows what the homework is for the child. Homework must be turned in first thing in the morning. It must be neat and complete. If a student does sloppy work, they must redo it at recess that day. If a student fails to do an assignment, they will flip a card and have to do the assignment at recess or for homework the next night. After homework is graded, it will be returned in the Friday Folder. However, if a student struggles with an assignment and misses several problems, the work will be given back and I will ask that it be redone with you (the parent). Please read with your child every night and practice math facts every night. This should be considered daily homework no matter what. Birthday Treats: In 2nd grade, we celebrate birthdays altogether as a grade on the last Friday of the month. For example, in October, all the October birthdays would be celebrated on the last Friday of October. Each class will be assigned a month where they have to bring in treats. For example, if my class was to take care of treats in October, my room parents would purchase enough treats for the whole second grade. We all go to one of the second grade classrooms, introduce the birthday boys/girls, sing happy birthday, enjoy our treats, and watch a short movie. Please do not send in treats for your child on their actual birthday. However, I do allow students to buy slushies for their class from the cafeteria. This is NOT required. Thank you. Restroom/Drinks/Office Visits Procedures: My classroom is right next to the restroom, so I am very easy-going when it comes to asking to use the restroom. However, this year I am trying something new. I will have a sign-out sheet where students will write their name, time left, and time returned. This is to ensure that students do not take advantage of going to the restroom or getting a drink. It is also good information to have in case of damage to the restrooms, a fire drill while a student is gone, and it helps me track any medical problems such as urinary tract infections, stomach problems, etc.. that I can discuss with you, the parent. I will not send students to the office unless they have a fever or have thrown up in the restroom. I noticed last year that several students would say they felt sick and when they get to the office, they get a cold glass of water and a mint, and then they are magically fine again. :) We were all kids once, and saying you're sick to get out of class has crossed all of our minds. :) When it comes to drinks, again I have a sign-out sheet and we are next to the drinking fountains. I do not like for the students to keep water bottles at their desk, but if I have a parent note that the student needs the water at their desk because of a cough or sore throat, I will allow it. Medicine: All medicine should be brought in by the parent in its original container and given to Mrs. Bridgewater in the office with instructions. The only thing I accept is cough drops. They must be accompanied by a note from the parent and I will keep them in my desk drawer and dispense them as needed. Hallway Behavior: Students will walk in two straight quiet lines in the hallway at all times. My motto for the hallway is "KEEP YOUR LIPS ZIPPED OR GET A CARD FLIPPED" During fire and tornado drills students will exit the classroom in ONE straight silent line. Talking during a fire or tornado drill is an ORANGE card flip (10 minutes of recess lost). Recess Procedures: Students should always come to school dressed appropriately to go outside for recess. That means bring hats, gloves, coats, and scarves for cold weather, and wear short or short sleeves for hot weather. We go outside if it is above freezing and not wet or snowing. During outside recess students will either be on the playground equipment or over by the basketball goal area. DO NOT BRING IN ITEMS FROM HOME FOR RECESS. No trading cards such as Pokemon cards are ever allowed. I will allow students to donate kickballs, basketballs, or jump ropes to the classroom for everyone to use. During inside recess, students will have several games and puzzles to play as well as chalkboards and dry erase boards to use. I am always in need of donations for inside recess such as board games, dry erase markers, dry erase boards, chalk, card games like Go Fish, Old Maid, flash cards, Legos, etc.. Thank you for your donations. Inside recess tends to get loud and for that reason, I give the class 3 warnings. On the third warning we quit playing even if our actual recess time is not over. Free Time Activities: All students do not work at the same pace. If students finish an assignment early there are some choices of things they have to do. First of all, every student should always have a book for silent reading at their desk. We go to the library once a week and I have a huge classroom library for students to choose from. If a student does not have a silent reading book and refuses to pick one from the library, he or she may be given a card flip for not being prepared for class. After finishing an assignment and reading silently for about 10 minutes, students may choose to do one of the following things: finishing work from earlier in the day, finishing work in his/her "Stay at School Folder", doing an activity book from the back table (Highlight magazine, Scholastic News, Word searches, Crossword puzzles, etc..), helping in the classroom, and/or doing a puzzle from the back of the room. Library Procedures and Rules: We go to the library once a week. Students are allowed to check out two books from his/her reading level each week. Books may only be renewed one time. Books must be returned the following week or brought back to be renewed. If a student has a book out for more than two weeks, a note will be sent home asking for the book or for $5.00 to replace it. When we are in the library, no one should speak above a whisper. When looking for books, only pull the book out slightly to see the cover, and DO NOT pull it all the way out. If you do pull a book all the way out, don't put it back. Please give it to the librarian so she can file it properly. I will help you find a book if you need help, but try our very best to know what you are looking for before we get there. We are only in the library for about 20 minutes and there is one of me, and 20 of you! :) Thanks for your help. After you check out your books, go sit and read silently by the door until all students are done. If you can't check out books that day because you did not return yours, you will be given writing paper and a pencil to write your spelling words 3 times each while you are waiting on the class. Cafeteria Procedures: Lunch money should be sent in at the beginning of the week to purchase a lunch ticket. Tickets are like money and students are responsible for not losing them between the classroom and the lunchroom. A "borrow slip" will be given if the student has no money and has not brought a lunch. Borrow slips should be paid back ASAP. If several borrow slips are given a note may be sent home by me or by the lunch staff. If students bring lunch, make sure it is full of healthy "brain" food. Steer clear of too many sweets or candy. Parents may eat lunch with their children. If you are going to buy a hot lunch for yourself, please have your child tell me in the morning so I can add it to our classroom order. Parents are not allowed to bring fast food in for their children. I will NOT assign cafeteria seats unless we have major problems as a class during the lunch period. This is a time for the students to relax, socialize with friends, and most importantly, to EAT! We have an early lunch, so we do not have a snack time in second grade. Feed your children a healthy breakfast in the morning. We eat from 10:36-11:01. By the time students get home, they will be ready for a snack (I know I always am! ). Substitute Teachers: My class should treat a Sub. as a guest in our classroom and give them even more respect and better manners than they give me. If a Sub. leaves a note about a behavior problem or if a child flips a card while I am gone, it counts double. For example: One card flip to yellow, would actually be an orange card flip. Classroom Job Procedures: Each child will apply for a classroom job and be hired to have that job. We switch jobs every 2 or 3 months. If a student does above and beyond what their job calls for, they will be rewarded with tokens or team points. If a student is doing a poor job or refusing to do their job, they will be given a warning, and then "fired" which means they don't get to choose a job for that period. Classroom jobs helps our class run more smoothly each day. Just like in real life, everyone must work together to make the world run smoothly.
