Welcome to Room 5C Online!
Our class is an active learning environment where students are exploring with guidance. Each day is jam packed with instruction and discussion as well as reflection.
Some key components of the school week are described below:
Math class happens everyday. Lessons may include teacher instruction, games, student practice, use of manipulatives, and discussion. The reading program has many dynamic pieces, including novel reading, literature discussions, reading workshop, book sharing, and literature responses. We also try to occasionally include readers' theatre.
Embracing the writing workshop format, our writing program has an equally diverse structure and includes focus word study and responses (vocabulary building), spelling conventions, and computer skills, in a format of teacher instruction and peer coaching and sharing.
Science and social studies are alternately taught in the last period of the day. In social studies, we begin with a study of Geography, Native Americans, and European Explorers before heading into Colonial Life and the American Revolution. In science we cover Health, Magnets & Motors, and Microorganism, before ending the year with Maturation. Interwoven with the above academics is an emphasis on community building and social skills. Ours is an encouraging, safe, explorative environment in which to learn and laugh. I am excited about a new year in fifth grade and look forward to getting to know the students as they embark on their last year in elementary school. Ms. Bory
