Oral Language

Pease Porridge hot,

Pease porridge cold,

Pease porridge in the pot,

Nine days old.

Some like it hot,

Some like it cold,

Some like it in the pot,

Nine days old.

When Jack’s a very good boy,

He shall have cakes and custard,

But when he does nothing but cry,

He shall have nothing but mustard.

We are having fun learning rhyming words.  You can practice at home by reading the classic Mother Goose or playing rhyming games with your child.

How many words can you think of that rhyme with cat?

How about fall?

How about fig

How about fan?

This is a hard one--How about beach?

Reading Comprehension

We are learning to recognize the beginning, middle, and end of a story.  Stories we have discussed will be noted on your weekly “Kids News.”

Math

We are have finished our unit with patterning, but will revisit it from time to time as this is a recurring theme in kindergarten.  We have begun work on left and right, matching, and number sense.  The pattern workbooks will go home soon and your child may finish it at home with you.

Science in K1

Fall is here.  Enjoy the view!  The trees are changing color—or at least as much as they can in San Diego!  We, Southern Californians, do not see the spectacular color of autumn leaves like they do in the Midwest or East, but San Diego does have a fall season.

Our science lessons have focused on trees and the changing seasons.  Have the kids look for fall colors.  Can they see the leaves changing color?  What colors do they see?  Why do leaves change color and fall off trees?  Walk around your neighborhood and collect fall leaves.

Pretty soon now the Ginkgo tree will start changing color in San Diego.  Its leaves turn a beautiful fall yellow.  This is an ancient tree—a living fossil that existed over 270 million years ago in the era of the dinosaurs.  Also look for the Sweet Gum, with its orange, yellow, and red leaves.

For a look at a Ginkgo tree, follow this link.

The Fall Festival coming up on Friday, 16 October will be a great opportunity to study the changing color of trees.
