Forensic Science Technician

Forensic science technicians (FST) use the natural sciences to solve crimes. They use biology, chemistry, and other sciences to help find out what happened.

Forensic Science Technician duties include:

    • Use the right methods and tools to collect and store physical evidence.
    • Try to imagine how pieces of evidence played a part at the crime scene.
    • Look at, test, or do research to find out about evidence, such as fibers.
    • Use test results and other findings to try to find a link to the suspect.
    • Talk with other experts to find out more about the evidence.
    • Write reports of findings and how the investigation and lab tests were done.
    • Testify about evidence or lab tests in court.

Required Education for Forensic Science Technicians:

  • A Bachelor's Degree is required for this job.  It requires about 4-5 years of post secondary education.

The average pay for a FST is $23.14 an hour.

Most FST work for federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. They work in a variety of settings both inside and outside.

The number of jobs for this career is expected to grow much faster than average!!!
