Reading Every child should be completing a reading log for each month. In order to receive full credit for your reading log (100%) they will need to read 400 minutes. For this month's book project, you may read any book that is at least 100 pages in length. There are 39 choices of projects from which to choose. Your project is due on December 1, 2009. A copy of the directions for the project has been distributed in class.
Math The children are reviewing division with 1 and 2 digit divisors and multiple step problem solving.
Science We are continuing to learn about ecosystems. The students will be researching biomes, and collecting facts on a "data disc." They will compare and contrast a fresh water ecosystem and a saltwater ecosystem. They will also create bar graphs to show the decline of land and species in the rainforest. The concept of biodiversity will be explored. Health The students have been learning about "Healthy Relationships." We talked about friendship and explored values related to it. They learned that everyone gets angry, and that learning to control your anger and express it in healthy ways can help you prevent quarrels, make friends, and earn the respect of others. Also, we discussed ways to stand up for yourself when dealing with negative peer pressure. And finally, nonverbal communication. Did you know that words only send 7% of a message? Your tone of voice sends 38% and other nonverbal cues send 55 % of the message. Social Studies We are studying Native Americans and reviewing for the Fifth Grade New York State Social Studies test. The children have been writing DBQ's. Each Monday the children get a new vocabulary list with a vocabulary quiz every Friday. The New York State Fifth Grade Social Studies test is a two day test which will be given on November 16 and 17.
