Weekly spelling lists are posted under the spelling tab!

Weekly Spelling

Every week's spelling lesson focuses on a spelling rule or generalization.

Every Monday students take a twenty word pretest.  Students who spell at least eighteen of the words correctly, move directly from the pretest to more challenging words (posted at the bottom of the weekly list).  Students that are having more difficulty by missing five or more words in the first ten words, will have a reduced list of ten words for the posttest.  All students will take a posttest on Friday.

In addition to weekly spelling lists, students will have a quick homework assignment each day of the week leading up to the posttest.  Monday through Wednesday, the students will receive a worksheet that reviews the main spelling focus for the week.  These worksheets will not take long to complete, however I expect them to be completed accurately using neat cursive handwriting.  Each student has been given two cursive handwriting worksheets (one for school and one for home) to review the formations of each cursive letter if they need it.  I will also provide a helpful cursive writing practice sheet for those students that are struggling with their letter formations.

Many helpful websites are available to help students practice weekly spelling lists.  One that I have found to be really beneficial is the Spelling City website.  A link has been posted to the left (under spelling) that takes you directly to my Spelling City class website.  Click on the reading story for the week and you will find the list along with a fun interactive practice test game.  However, please do not study in advance for pretestsA true pretest tests a child's knowledge of the words without prior studying.  This gives me a good indication of how well the students know their weekly spelling words before any additional activities are done for the week.
