Classroom Economy
Throughout each week, students can earn credits for any number of things. For example, students hold classroom jobs and earn credits on a weekly basis according to our payroll (see classroom jobs under the classroom economy tab). Credits are also earned sporadically for following rules, showing good character, putting extra effort into school work, and being responsible. Debits are given to students when they break laws (classroom rules) in our community of learners. At the end of each pay period (end of each grading period), students add up their credits and subtract their debits to calculate their total.
I write paychecks to all students at the end of each pay period that reflect the amount that they have earned after balancing their credits and debits.
Students cash their checks at the Gerardi Bank to receive their money (Garfield Bucks) or they can deposit their money in the Gerardi Bank after filling out a deposit slip (see attached file below). Students are encouraged to deposit their money for safe keeping because they will earn interest and have extra money to use at our end of the year auction. The Gerardi Bucks can be used to purchase items at our classroom store at the end of each pay period. Students can spend their money or choose to save it for bigger purchases. Students will be learning many "real-world" concepts that can't be taught as effectively in a textbook. The class store is ultimately used to teach economic lessons that include decision making, opportunity cost, supply and demand, and inflation.
