National Physical Activity Plan Launches

CHECK THIS OUT! Finally, research based recognition of the importance of physical health to academics.

CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) is releasing a new report, entitled The Association Between School-Based Physical Activity, Including Physical Education, and Academic Performance, on April 14, 2010.  The report indicates that school-based physical activity may help improve students’ grades and test scores and positively affect other factors that influence academic achievement.  The report also concludes that adding time during the school day for physical activity does not appear to take away from academic performance. The report and executive summary are available on the DASH Health and Academics Web site.

Why Do Children Need Physical Education?

The verdict is in. There is no doubting that physical fitness not only keeps us physically healthy, but it is also linked to improved brain retention, builds our immune system, helps to combat treatable mental diseases such as depression and low self-esteem. Please take some time and read reports from many leading national health experts (files listed on bottom of page). Also look at the NASPE Advocacy Toolkit.

The California study is probably the most recent complete and compelling research which traverses socio-economics, gender, and race. It targets elementary school, middle school, and high school. Please read the article below.

The DPS PE webpage has some great parent resources to view current research, suggestions, and ideas to get your kids up and moving!
