SPARK is a research-based, public health organization dedicated to creating, implementing, and evaluating programs that promote lifelong wellness. All DPS Elementary Schools have received a Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) Federal Grant. Steele was one of thirty schools in the final year of a three year rotation to receive the grant. The PEP Grant provides each school the proper equipment, curriculum, and professional development for teachers needed to maximize learning by students in Physical Education. The SPARK curriculum aims to get kids moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) at least 50% of their gym time. No more waiting in lines for a turn, or for a piece of equipment. SPARK curriculum involves activities for majority of student involvement. In addition, the grant provides enough safe equipment for large classes. Drop by and check out or activities and equipment anytime, however, you'll want to participate in the excitement so dress accordingly! SNEAKER ALERT! There's a cool sneaker reminder letter and specials schedule at the bottom of the page to print and hang on your refridgerator! Students must wear appropriate shoes to gym class (rubber bottom, snug, without a heel). For their safety and the safety of others, they will not be allowed to participate without gym shoes. Please, no Crocs, no sandals, no flip-flops, no Heelies, and no heeled shoes. Welcome to My Site Welcome to the Steele Elementary School Physical Education page! I am very excited to work with your children in movement, teamwork, social skills, goal-setting, problem-solving, strength, flexibility, and health related issues. Physical Education is very important in a variety of different ways. It's a time where our lifestyle has become increasingly sedentary. Our daily lives are molded by too much screen time (television, computers, video games), and we're replacing fresh foods with processed ingredients (fast-food, enriched white sugar and flour, high fructose corn syrup), then adding a twist of a fast paced society dosed with stress and sleep deprivation. Something has to give. A quality PE program is the single best option to introduce and maintain all of our children's healthy interests on a path toward life-long habits enveloping both physical activity and nutrition. Exercise and activity help people build self-confidence, manage our stress levels, stack our immune systems, helps prevent childhood obesity and its sidekicks Type II Diabetes/sleep apnea/heart disease/stroke, and teaches us to develop life-long habits of nutrition and daily exercise. Please enjoy our site and take some time to read about how important physical activity can be to your childs brain development and their overall physical health. One of my favorite websites to visit is the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) . Another website with more ideas to help your child stay healthy and active is the Parent Resources page on the DPS PE Website.
