Here is what is going on in our classroom: In Reading we are reading the story "By the Shores of Silver Lake". We will be learning about character traits. Students did a great job on their biography reports. Their book project for November will be to read a non-fiction book of their choice and create a bag of chips about their topic. Enrichment class Group B are reading Haiku poems and identifing what words, lines, and stanzas mean in the poems the first week. During the second week of class students will write their own Haikus. Poems will be posted online when they are complete. Students have been so excited about writing their poems that we have decided to also write tongue twisters. These will also be posted online when complete. In Math we are beginning our fifth unit, Algabraic Patterns. Look for the unit Family Letter to come home with the unit vocabulary and a possible activity to do with your child. During the unit we will be learning about variables, expressions, equations, patterns, and function tables. If your child has forgotten their homework, they have been attached to the Math Class section of our classroom site. Click on the yellow circle containing Chapter 5, find the lesson number, and click on it. Choose your homework and print it out. Science will begin on November 2nd. Our first unit is Food Chains and Webs. Students will be learning about habitats, what plants and animals need to survive, and who eats who in food chains and webs. Social Studies we will begin on November 2nd. Our first unit will be The Land and Settlement of Maryland. We will be learning about Maryland's land, water, and regions, the Paleo-Indians and Woodland Indians of Maryland, and map skills. Then we will focus on the settlement of Maryland and the growth of the Maryland colony. In Writing we are about to begin participating in an online project about tongue twisters. Our class has been assigned the responsibility for creating a tongue twister using the letter A. Once our tongue twister is written and illustrated we will be sending our work out to other classrooms around the United States and in Scotland. These classrooms will in turn send us their tongue twisters. When we have received all the tongue twisters our class will have a book of tongue twisters for every letter in the alphabet. Following the project each student will write their own tongue twister using a letter of their choice.
