Welcome Welcome

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to the start of a new school year!  I am excited about being back in the classroom and am looking forward to working with you and your child this year.   Over the year your child will learn about the following:

Math – Our units are:  Graphing, Time, Money, Number Sense, Multiplication, Division, Geometry, Measurement, Fractions, Ratio and Probability, Decimals, Algebra

Science – Our units are: Food Chains and Webs, Chemistry, Water Cycle, Erosion

Social Studies – Our units are: Maryland’s Regions, Maryland’s Native Americans, Maryland in the Colonial Period, Revolutionary War Period, and Civil War Period

Reading – Skills we will focus on are: reading strategies, spelling, vocabulary, listening comprehension, reading fluently, phonics, and connecting what we read to our own experiences.

Writing –  Skills we will focus on are: grammar, punctuation, and writing in different forms such as letters, stories, articles, poems, paragraphs, and essays.

At the beginning of the school year your child will stay with me during the Enrichment period.  During this time students will learn and practice good listening skills and getting along with others.  Reading homework will start on the second day of school.  Your child will need to read for 20 minutes each night and write 3 sentences about what they have read.  Math homework will also start on the second day of school and is due the next day.  Students will need to complete their math sheet and study their facts.

Choptank has school rules that are the same throughout the school.  We call these rules “Following the Stars”.  The rules are stay in your assigned area; talk in a friendly voice; always be prepared; respect others and their property; and safety – keep your body and objects to yourself.  I believe in being positive and reward good behavior and work frequently.  Your child may receive praise, certificates, pencils, jobs at school, objects from the treasure box, or participate in a celebration of their accomplishments.

Throughout the school year there will be a variety of special classroom activities and celebrations.  I encourage you to attend these functions when possible.  Also, please feel welcome to come to the class at any time to observe your child.

I believe that a good parent-teacher relationship is necessary for school success.  Throughout the year I will communicate with you through notes, telephone calls, weekly progress reports, and parent-teacher conferences.  I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.  You can call me at school (410) 228-4950, send me a note, or e-mail me at mrstravis@live.com.  The best times to reach me at school are from 8:00 am – 8:10 am or 1:30 pm – 1:15 pm.

Thank you in advance for your help this year.  As we work together as a team, we can help all our students have a most successful school year!
