Classroom News Mrs. Toney's Newsletter Dear Parents, What an exciting week we have had! On the day that our last caterpillar spun it's chrysalis, the five others hatched out of theirs. We carefully transported them to our butterfly garden and took them outside where we set them free. We are waiting on our last caterpillar to hatch! We went under the sea this week and learned all about the names of the different oceans, the different parts of the ocean and the animals that live in the ocean. We specifically learned about the coral reefs, the whale, starfish and dolphin. I want to thank all of you so very, very much for all you did for me and Mrs. Lowery this week. I loved the thank you notes that the children all wrote, the flowers, the wonderful lunch from Los Hermanos, the adorable books for our classroom, and my new bamboo chair for the classroom. You can can imagine my surprise after such wonderful treats from all of you to then be presented with the cutest Mickey Mouse bowl with gift cards and a picture frame. WOW!! Thank you so very much to all of you for your contributions and your help making our week wonderful!! Thank you also to our wonderful room moms for putting all of this wonderful week together!! This week we learned about: Lang. Arts: describing words, compare and contrast within a story, identify the beginning, middle and end of a story,recognize words in a familiar context, make predictions from pictures and titles, match consonant and short vowel sounds to letter, recognize and match the 26 upper case letters to the lower case letters; write a story with one event on own, use left to right and top to bottom directionality in writing; use left to right pattern of reading and writing; identifies first and last name in print; write or tells about a picture to describe; prints first name and last name using correctly formed letters Math:estimate quantities using five and ten as benchmarks, use informal strategies to share objects equally, make fair trades involving combinations of pennies and nickels, or pennies and dimes, build number combinations to 10 orders daily events, count by 1's and 10's to 100, tell time when daily events occur, compares two or more sets of objects 1-10 and identifies which is equal, more, and less, identify the seasons of the year, and what occurs in each of them, name the months of the year,count 20 objects, matches numbers to sets to 20, recognizes numerals to 20, counts number of objects to 30 using one on one; use the words today, yesterday and tomorrow when describing the passage of time,identify coins and their value for penny, nickel, understand the concept of zero Social Studies/Science: use tools and instruments for observing and manipulating objects in scientific activities Ask me about:our caterpillars, how fast they changed into butterflies, our last caterpillar, the three different parts of the ocean, the names of the four major ocean (see if I can sing you the song we learned), what happens to the coral reef if there is too much pollution, how dolphins and whales are different from fish
