Social Work Groups

Students and families may access social work services in varying degrees including participation in individual or group counseling, consultation, referral or intervention after a critical incident at home or school. Social Skills Groups Students involved in a social skills group work with peers under the direction of the social worker to improve their ability to interact with others in a socially acceptable manner. Students learn the importance of developing and maintaining positive social skills. Social skill topics include: Manners Cooperation Friendship Feelings Tolerance Organization Whole Body Listening Diversity Responsibility Self-Esteem Verbal & Non-Verbal Expressive language Anger Management Decision Making Problem Solving Banana Split Family Groups Students involved in a Banana Splits group work with others, under the guidance of the social worker, who are experiencing similar family challenges. Banana Split topics include: Parental Separation and Divorce Change Grief and Loss Self-Esteem Coping Who Am I? Feelings Self Confidence Kids & Company Together for Safety This a personal safety program delivered to each Kindergarten class over the course of several months. The program helps the students become aware of safety risks in the home and community. It teaches children practical strategies to protect themselves from danger and how to avoid possibly dangerous situations. Popular themes in this program are learning the "I mean business voice", discussing stranger danger, singing the buddy system song, practicing addresses and telephone numbers and calling 911. The book, Dinosaurs, Beware!, A Safety Guide by Marc Brown and Stephen Krensky is a fun book that highlights a variety if safety topics.
