Course Objectives

 

I.             Vocabulary (lexicon)

A. Students will be exposed to key sign/word illustrations in class for the purpose of incorporating them in conversations, dialogue, and stories.

B. Students will demonstrate receptive and expressive mastery of those lexical items drawn from class activity.

 

II.           Grammatical Features

A. Students will analyze videotape conversations and dialogue to complete workbook activities. Progress will be timely according to chapter by chapter pacing of the teacher.

B. Students will apply those grammatical and syntactic features in their dialogue among classmates in the class.

C. Students will demonstrate appropriate non-manual markers in context of ASL conversation and dialogue.

 

III.         Cultural Awareness

A.    Readings on the history of ASL, the Deaf community, and attitudes for admission into Deaf culture will be applied interactively.

B.    Students will participate in deaf cultural events & activities (Texas School for the Deaf (TSD), ASL Social Night -will be held here at NYOS, bi-monthly and many more)

 

IV.        Conversational Skills

A.    Students will demonstrate the ability to initiate, conduct and terminate short context-specific conversations with individuals that are ASL signers other than the teacher.

 

Course Expectations/Requirements

 

1.     Voicing in class will not be permitted. All conversations are to occur in sign language. This will be beneficial for all students to enhance their conversational and receptive skills.

2.     Any assignments given by the teacher (quizzes, homework, readings, units of study, etc.) will be followed in order for the class to proceed in a timely fashion.

3.     Attendance is vital to the success of individual growth in language proficiently.

4.     Videotaping diagnostics will be done on a prearranged schedule.

5.     No GUM allowed in class.

Grades

 

40% - Projects

30% - Participation (deaf events, activities, asking questions, dialogues, etc.)

20% - Tests/Quizzes

10% - Classroom assignments & homework

 

*Any student that is failing (receiving grade less than C) will be placed in a tutorial session in the morning (time to be announced).
