A Multicultural, Thematic Approach to Arts Education

At the Brigantine Elementary school, our "Specials" team (arts department) teaches the arts in a unique, exciting and long term memory format which utilizes each and every child's learning style. What we do is really quite simple:we pick a location around the world to work on, then in each of our disciplines, art, music, library, computers and gym, we revolve some (or all) of our endeavors with the kids towards that main topic. By doing this, each and every child has an opportunity to succeed in their favorite discipline, while still learning about the multicultural topic and therefore, retaining the information better! Besides that-it's fun! Each year we have traveled near and far and explored beautiful cultures through the arts. The culminating showcase, is of course, ARTS NIGHT! Our "Specials" team is one of a kind-here they are: Mrs. Baldwin:computers, Mrs. Pomatto:gym, Mrs. Gragg:art, Mrs. King:music, Senora Kim:spanish and Mrs. Carber (missing):library. p.s. This program has won several awards including a BEST PRACTICE of NJ and a Character Education PROMISING PRACTICE.
