Classroom Rules and Consequences Classroom Rules and Consequences

--

Parents and Students,

Welcome to a new school year. I am so excited about teaching Science to you this year. Science is truly something that I love; I hope you will too very soon. As a matter of fact, my goal is to show you how fun, easy and interesting Science can be.

First, I want to tell you a few things that you will need to know in order to be successful in Science this year. We will go over this in class, however, it is important to read this, and keep it in your Science binder to refer back to.

  • Parents must read this, and return the bottom portion.
  • Upon entering the classroom, bell work will be posted. You will have exactly 5 minutes to work on this everyday. At the end of 5 minutes, you will go over it and we will begin class. You will keep the bell work on one piece of paper and turn it in when I ask for it. This will be random (mostly biweekly).
  • Reminders will be written on the white board. Check this everyday.
  • All daily grades: quizzes, class work, lab grades, etc. count once; tests and projects count twice. All grades are added together and divided by the total number of grades.
  • Midterm and final exams count as 1/7th of your yearly average together (as much as a six weeks.
  • Parents can help on projects, but students must do the work. I will ask your child questions about the project to check for understanding. If they did the project themselves, they will understand it!
  • You can expect pop quizzes throughout the week and about 3 tests a six weeks, depending on our topic(s).
  •  Notes will be given before quizzes and tests. If you study the notes, you will make a good grade. All test and quizzes are made from the notes, class work, and class discussion; you will be required to think and explain answers. It will not be a matter of reciting notes, and then forgetting it after the test.

  • You must complete your work within 3 days of your arrival back to school. If you are absent several days in a row, you will be allowed more time. You will need to get notes from a friend or on the web page. Test and quizzes will be made up during study hall or extra time in class.
  • If you are present at the time an assignment is due, and do not turn it in, it is a zero that day. If you do not turn in homework on time, it is a zero as well. This is a school wide policy.
  • Planners and binders will be checked every week to make sure you are organized and have all assignments written down.
  • Binders should have dividers labeled and in this order: Calendar (on top, no divider), grades (notebook paper to write down grades), Vocabulary words, notes, work to be turned in, graded work. Binders will be check for this on a regular basis for a daily grade.
  • Extra credit is only available through Brainpop Extra credit sheets and tickets.
    • Brainpop:
      • Students will receive a Brainpop sheet once a six weeks. The sheet will have a particular set of Brainpop videos on it. The student may watch the video, complete the quiz that follows, and have a parent, computer lab teacher, or classroom teacher initial beside the video and write in the number of questions they get correct. The student will receive credit for the number correct and it will be added to daily assignments. This will be turned in once a six weeks. The due date will be posted on the Brainpop sheet.
    • Tickets:
      • If I see academic excellence or improvement that I feel is note-worthy the student may receive a ticket. Many times during or class review, students have an opportunity to earn these. I will ask a student a question, if they get it correct, they earn a ticket. If not, someone else in the room has a chance to answer the question.
      • A ticket may be given to a student may redeem the ticket at anytime on any daily grade. It must be stapled to the paper in order to receive credit. They may use the tickets one at a time, or all at once. If the student looses the ticket it may not be redeemed or replaced. I suggest they be kept in a secure place and their name written on them in ink.
  • Bonus questions will be available on the quizzes and tests occasionally.
  • For information about our class including assignments and notes you may go to gcssd.org/mms, click on faculty, and click on Mrs. Faulkner. This will be updated weekly. You will find this information along with quizzes, tests and all other information pertaining to my classes. It will include what we will learn this year, cheerleading, Booster Club reminders, calendar. The calendar is helpful for keeping up with announced quizzes and test dates.

Now that you know what to do in class to make a good grade, and stay on top of things, I want to tell you what to expect in the classroom.

o   You will be expected to be polite and kind to everyone in the classroom. Use your manners to the teacher and the other students. Shouting out or talking out of turn will not be allowed due to respect for others and to minimize the disruption of other’s learning. This is extremely important in my classroom.

o   You must raise your hand quietly if you need assistance or have a question. I will get to you as soon as possible.

o   If you need help on your work, I will come to you; therefore you may stay in your seat at all times.

o   Most of the science equipment is breakable, therefore you must be careful. When doing labs, you must listen carefully for all instructions before touching anything. This is for your safety. More information about lab is on the lab safety sheet.

o   You must bring all the materials needed to class such as a book, paper, pencil, library book (If you complete your assignment early). You will not be allowed to leave the room once the bell has rung without your planner signed and dated by the teacher.

o   The bell does not dismiss you, the teacher does.

o   During discussions, I will call on you. If someone has a question, you may raise your hand; otherwise I will randomly and equally call on students. This does not mean that everyone will be called on in every class.

o   When I am out of the room or we have a visitor, it is business as usual. You are to act no differently regardless of who is in the room. The rules still apply.

o   All papers will be turned into a tray on my desk that is assigned for your class period. Papers that are graded will be in a different tray and may be passed out by someone at the beginning of class.

o   You must have your planner signed and dated with time to go anywhere in the building. If you lose your planner, planner pages can be purchased for 1 dollar in the office.

o   No shorts or skirts, even with leggings 3 inches about your knee.

o   PARENTS-  I GIVE VERY LITTLE, IF ANY WRITTEN HOMEWORK….BUT THEY WILL ALWAYS HAVE SOMETHING TO STUDY FOR SCIENCE!!!!!!!

o   When you finish your work you may….

o   Do unfinished or make-up work, homework

o   Read your library book, or fill out your planner.
